this is why I have so many different rods and reels of different value. If I take someone fishing that is experienced, than I let them use better equipment than someone that, has never fished that much. I have had several rods and reels broken by someone that I took fishing. I had one person stand on top of my Plano Phantom Pro tackle box, and crushed the lid. I asked him not to stand on my tackle box and he said it was already broken before he stood on it. I never took him fishing again. But as far as rods or reels I value the friendships more that the fishing equipment. I can replace the fishing equipment ,but friendships, true friendships, are hard to come by.
If your friend paid you for the rod, then put a new tip on the rod and give it to the friend ,and ask that there not be any bad feeling. Rod tips are very fragile. I have broken some and not noticed it right away.

What kind of friends do you have??!!

This is a non-starter...Think about your post and your "friends" before something like this comes up again...

For example, my friends are worth a hell of a lot more that ....$40.00, or simply put they are not "friends".

The last time someone "numbered" the quality of relationships in this manner it was "30 pieces of silver". Come on Sac, you are better than this.

Mikeg is absolutely right, this kind of thing does not deserve a post.

We can all take up a collection and send you $40.00 if it is that critical.

I may be new, but I do have a few principals, and I am sure you do too. Retract this thread, it is beneath you.

I take new people out all the time. If you use equipment, it will break from time to time. S__t happens. The only time I ask for some one to pay for a pole, is when they break it on purpose. Only happened twice in several years of guiding. The cost of a broken pole is not worth a friendship. My 2 cents.

The only time I expect some compensation for a broken rod would be in draw competition and someone accidently stepped on or otherwise caused ny rod to be broken. Otherwise, accidents happen. If he stepped on my wifes rose bush and broke it would he plant another? A friend would offer to pay and I would decline his offer. Next time it may be me that breaks something. I don't take non friends fishing, whether they have equipment or not. I can't imagine asking a friend to pay for a broke rod or lost lure etc. He may have to buy drinks or bait for a year.:D

If you ask a friend to go fishing, you don't expect him to pay for damaging equipment. If you expect this, you should expect to get sued if he gets hurt. Furnish cheap rods and reels. No one uses my $40.00 dollar rods.

If he pays for the rod thats good. If not he never gos fishing again.
I pick who gets to use my rods. And always keep a cheep rod and reel for the ones that i think may break the rods.

HEY...I didn't start this post cause I needed the 40 bucks. I have all the toys I want and then more. I want something I go buy it. I can't help it if other people are careless and break stuff...The more I thought about it the more I realized this guy is just a user. From the time he got to my house he was complaining about this and that and wanted a steak dinner, etc. He thought I was trying to get off cheap by having a FRESH fried crappie dinner. Heck I spent the afternoon before catching fish just for the big fry. Either way, I started this post to see what the opinion was about people breaking your things and who then replaces it.

It wasn't a tip broken but an eye that is set under the glass, The rod is a loss. But it did have something I didn't think about....A WARRANTY. Thank you Ugly Stick. But now the real delima is if I send it in and get another free of charge, do I tell him now that he has gotten all mad at me. Who knows?

I think it's a simple case about the $$$ though...If a friend wrecks your car wouldn't you expect him to fix it? I think principals are in play...

I never hand anyone something that I would get upset about if they broke it. If they are a friend and don't try to replace it they ain't much of a friend. If you ask them to replace it you ain't a friend.
I take some teens fishing from time to time. They break stuff and have no money so I know if they break it I will replace it. Lures that I tell them not to use are a different story. Like when fishing heavy brush for crappie, a crankbait for a novice is not a good choice. If they insist and lose my lure They don't get to go with me again until they get me that lure, not pay for it, get it for me.

Other day I was in wally world. I took down a rod to see how it felt. I gave it the tip test. Snap, man that rod was brittle...Should I go back and pay for that rod? I just put it back in the rack and decided I wouldn't try that type rod.

Default the best of this thread & my 2 cents

Put a new tip on it the busted one and give it to him to keep. Then he won't think your a hard-arss.

Friends don't let a $40.00 ROD come between them

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would not have even put a thing like that on HERE!!!!!!!!!!

Life is way too short! Rods can be replaced but friends are sometimes much harder to find. There have been times when I'd trade a good rod or two for someone fun and honest to fish with. Someone that would pay his share and never tell where we fished, and clean a few fish too. Hope you guys work it out. Don

Had this happen last year. My friend and I went fishing and he drove my truck so I could sleep (as I work 2nd shift) he hits a deer and it did over $4000. damage to the truck. He offered to pay the $250 I was going to have to pay. No way I would let him. You know what my only worry was? Did the F---in deer hit the boat.*duane*

I was raised if you let someone use your gear give them the best you have. I would Never give someone a rod or reel I would not use myself. I was also raised if you break something you was using you replace it with somthing better. A friend breaks a rod so what, he is a friend, give him another one to use. *duane*
