I have pretty much narrowed it down to either a 06 Mercury 90HP 4 stroke or a 06 Yamaha 90HP 4 stroke.
Someone has told me that Yamaha makes Mercury's 4 stoke... is that correct?
If so I think yamaha might be the one to go with?

Mercury buys Yamaha powerheads/engines for some of its models and horsepower ranges of 4strokes ... just like it did for some of the previous years 2strokes. I believe the Verado line is the only true, all Mercury designed, motor in the Mercury outboard line-up.
I read part (about 30pages) of a 180 pg PDF on the lawsuit of Mercury Motors vs Yamaha Motors ... concerning their contention that Yamaha Motors was "dumping" motors into the market at less than fair market value, for the purpose of gaining a greater market share. (even though they were more than happy to buy the motors from Yamaha, at that price, so as to have a complete range of HP motor line). Yamaha won the suit. It was interesting reading ... because it also contained info about the "problems" of certain other motor brands (OMC/Ficht - Merc Optimax) of previous years. And it also related how Mercury Motors was a prime customer of Yamaha powerheads ( outboard engines). It even made referrences to the fact that, only the "glitter rocket" (Bass boat) crowd was reluctant to switch to the 4stroke engines. Seems they prefer the "faster holeshot" from the 2stroke ... over the reliability, fuel efficiency, and environmentally friendlier nature of the 4stroke. (which, the remaining customer crowd, thought to be of greater importance than speed). ........cp
I have shopped for new motors several times within the past five years and everytime I end up coming home to my 1976 Johnson 115. You just can't kill it! I work around a couple of new Johnson 140 four strokes that I am really impressed with. The only Merc I have been around has left us on the lake a couple of times. Good luck with your decision.
Do you mean left you as in run off and left you speed wise, or do you mean died on you and you had to have help off the lake. I have a 90HP Merc OPTIMAX and it is very fuel efficient for a 2 stroke and is pretty swift I think. I have only had it for a year but am impressed.
F M..Dealer told me that 75 and below now made by Merc. Others are Yamaha powerhead with merc electronics. Merc just bought Yama trechnology here. I looked at Yama and Mercs. Reason I got Merc (2005) was Yama didn't mak 60 and Merc 60 with Big Foot was 800 bucks less than Yama 50. Also think Johnson 4 stroke is a Suzzy in a dress..ha....I don't think u can go wrong with any of them..........
