That's a good time to experiment. You might be surprised what you learn.

Catching fish is fun but for me it's just a bonus to being out on the water. Enjoy where you are, what you're doing... fish or no fish... listen to the sounds... relax...slow down....

I like to stay all day regardless if they are biting or not. If I got to fish more than one day a week then my answer may be a little bit different. If they have lockjaw and I can't buy a bite then I'll go scouting for some different areas to fish or to put out stakebeds on for another day and time. I try to make my day on the water as productive as possible. That being said, don't give up on the tough days. Those are the days you'll learn something. Anybody can catch them when they are biting. It's the days that the bite is tough that'll make you a better fisherman. That's when you learn something about boat control, differences in jig size, speed of presentation, and jig color.

Since I can fish every day and typically catch fish- I will often quit for the day after about 2 hours and sometimes quit after an hour or less. If fishing with someone else I will adjust to their "schedule".
If there is no action, 2 hours would be about the longest I would stay out.

I am with Darryl. When you can't get a fish to bite anymore than it is time to try something that you have never done before, or just go scouting around and see if you can find some new structure that you didn't know about before. I have a hard time quitting anything that I set out to accomplish. Lightning is one of the few things that will make me quite earlier than I wanted. EB

I generally stay out for most of the day. If fthe bite slows down, ill go searching for structure and just plain lollygag. Last year the one day my wife went, I slipped on the ramp and barked my shin up. After oohing and owing for ten minutes, I got the boat off the trailer and fell in the water getting off on the dock. We loaded up and went home, her snickering all the way!
