I've been using Bronze #6 Eagle Claw Light Wire Aberdeen Cricket Hooks for years.
Why?
1) Less likely for fish to see them in our clear to slightly stained water.
2) Small gap gets hung up a lot less.
3) Can straighten with 8-pound line without disturbing the cover. Bend back, re-bait and back to fishing in seconds.
4) Let's the minnow - especially the small ones our crappie seem to prefer - swim around more naturally.
5) Less traumatic on the minnow (makes smaller hole) so they live longer on the hook.
6) They catch fish like these 1.75 to 2.75-pounders we caught this week:
I have them rigged up with 8-pound Berkley XT Green and 1/2-inch Thill Pencil Style Slip Floats on 10' B&M Crappie Wizards.
The biggest difference over bigger, stiffer hooks is that we do SET THE HOOK. A quick, firm hook-set will put these hooks through the hard tissue in the middle of the crappie's top lip 95% of the time.
