I'd used this stuff before...years ago...with no ill effects. I read alot about different ways to do this type of cleaning in a pontoon forum...some swore by this method...so said not to do it. I think the trick is to spray a 50/50 solution first (mixed with water)...and definately apply to a WET surface very evenly (a wet surface helps tremendously here!). This is a mild acid from what I understand, similar to the wheel cleaners. There's a product called "shark hide" or "shark skin" that can be applied after cleaning...supposed to keep them looking that way...but it ain't cheap.
It appeared to me that the brightener working mostly where it needed to...some areas that didn't really need cleaning (such as the top of my pontoons) didn't "foam" when the brightener was applied...the nasty waterline stain foamed up like the brightener was cleaning more aggressively only where it needed to. I inspected the toons very carefully after the fist spraying, and did spray a second time. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again if I ever need to.
