Good tip Nightprowler64...
I often use my rod length as a guide to line depth....
Take some orange sewing thread and put 25 wraps or so around the rod, 10-ft from the rod tip and use Hard-as-Nails to secure it. Now you can easily set a length or adust it from this reference mark.

I switch from 6# fireline braid to 4# spiderwire leader at 10' length which is a quick reference on depth.

Also kind of handy to have a ruler on the rod. From the top of the handle toward the tip mark from 10" to 18" . just might keep you from movin around the boat so much to get an idea of what's in your hand. Fly guys use em too. If you were real good with the fine thread used for winding guides, 3 or 4 wraps would do it. Something to do when boredom sets in.

The fishing was good,it was the catching that was bad
Nice tip. I should have thought of it long ago.
