    Default Where's the water???

I drove over to Sherburne WMA last Saturday, I went to the Big Bama ramp by the shooting range and the water level was down at the very bottom of the ramp. Is there a way to find out the water level before driving back over there again?

The rain can't come soon enough. I went to Butte La Rose this morning; the ramp at the rest stop under I-10. There's always trucks and empty trailers there when I go by, so there shouldn't be any problems. Not today.... the road is blocked and there's a big sign, "ramp closed." I'm putting more hours on my trailer than my boat; I'm gonna start telling people that I'm from Sahara Parish, Louisiana.

    Shaky,
I’m not an expert, but big Alabama gets fresh water a few ways. If there is a real, real big rain it gets water from the rain of course, but it is also part of the water shed for that part of Pointe Coupee parish that lies within the Morganza spillway. A second way, and I think the most substantial way big Alabama gets fresh water is when we get our yearly river rises and the Atchafalaya River backs-up into it.
So…, I believe one answer to your question is to check any of the river gauge levels of the Atchafalaya River from Simsport on down south; if the readings are low you can assume the water level in big Alabama is low.
This is just my impression…again, I’m not an expert so don’t bet the farm on my explanation!

That was a great idea. I headed over to waterdata.usgs.gov and found them. Those graphs show how bad we're hurting for rain.

Shaky...I don't know anything about the Alabama...As for Henderson, you could have continued West on the Interstate to the Henderson exit and take the road over to Pats Restaurant, then right to Basin Landing...only another 6 miles(?) from the public launch...Henderson water is very low right now (6.15 ft. on the Pelba gage)....They close the public launch at around 7.5 ft....I do not like to go below 8 ft...The Pelba gage is the one I follow for Henderson and is located in Lake Pelba under the Interstate about 300 yards west of the public launch...Here is the link to the Pelba gage...Note: it will not be the same reading as the levels on the Atchafalaya River...
