Bayou Black

So, Ive never really sacalait fished, let alone gone out to Bayou Black. With 11 days off from work, Im looking to make at least one or two trips there. How is the fishing around there, specially around the Mandalay area? Not looking for spots or coordinates, I honestly just wanna know if Im barking up the wrong tree or if I outta go toward the shortcut road between Gibson and Schriever?

Bayou Black is tough right now. The key to it is finding good water and grass. The Manlay area I would suggest Orange Grove, 70 mile. The best water will be south of the Intercoastal. Blue Bird is always good. If you haven’t been there look over it on goggle. It’s a very large area. Also I may suggest Bay Wallace.
With all the rain and wind lately you will need to do some running to find good water. Another suggestion when you look at goggle pay attention to marsh drains in pipeline area in Turtle Bayou. Moving water in that area is the key.
I see you live in Bourg, lake beouf and bayou da allemends is starting to turn on. Hope this helps.

So, lemme ask, would you reccomend the run to Des Allemands or Beouf over Bayou Black right now? Im open to fishing anywhere, but because Black is 20 minutes from my house its super tempting. But if the fishing isn't too good, Im willing to go further.

First off, welcome to the forum, glad you decided to join up with us. It's good to have another local join in and share stories and information. I live in Houma and fish all the places you asked about. Another place very close to you is the Lake Long/Hollywood Canal area. It's good for some quick trips and sometimes they pay off handsomely. We're in a tough time of year for catching as compared to what's coming up soon. As winter progress you will run into low water and muddy water in many places, so as Bayou Boy suggested you need to run around and find some clearing water. You will find this mostly in dead end canal. Today at 4:23 PM winter will begin. today is the shortest day of the year. As the days grow longer the fishing will get better. The spawn is right around the corner and that's when it's fairly easy to catch some nice fish. Until then the sacalait will be feeding heavily preparing to spawn. I mostly fish out of Cannon's Landing as it's close, I'm able to cover a lot of area and even salt water fish from there if I want. Since we live so close to one another, if you want we can get together and discuss this a lot better. I live in East Houma and I am retired so I can usually meet anytime I'm not fishing.

That would work too. I remember our first trip, we did pretty good. In fact we cleaned out that one spot so good that I haven’t caught but one or two there since.

Well, I went try a few of the bayous near Lake Long today. So much grass and dirty water I couldn't get anything, and it was hard just trying to find areas where the grass wasn't thicker than shag carpet.Decided to try out of Canon's tomorrow. If I do well, Ill go back Sunday. If not, Im gonna go throw the fly rod for redfish. Either way, a weekend on the water is better than one at home!

If we get some colder weather the grass will disappear over time, and the poule du will give it hell. The water quality will improve as we move into spring.

I saw so many coots out today it was unreal. Kinda got me wanting to go sit the Solo out in PAC and try to shoot another mallard and a few gadwall.
