Do you have to just wait to lock through or is there a schedule of some sort?

You have to pull a rope and you'll hear a horn blow. Then depending on whether or not someone is already going thru, you just wait until they open the gate. Until the other day, I had never waited over 5 minutes for them to open. You have to throw a rope over a sliding tieoff, and then just hold both sides of the rope in your hand. Don't tie the rope off to your boat or on your hand, in case something hangs up, you can just turn it loose. He'll blow the horn at you to tell you to come in when the gate is open, or leave when you're in and the gate is opened back up.

In Natchitoches at the museum at Grand Ecore, they have a simulator that you can work and go thru locks. Really a neat thing. Google locking thru and watch someone on youtube. It's not hard, but is a little daunting the first time.
