I decided to brave the cold and go to Grand Bayou, at Coushatta, this morning. I set the alarm for 5:30 and got all of my coffee making stuff ready and loaded my brand new bottle of Slab Sauce in the boat. I woke up at 7:10.
After checking the weather and making the coffee, I decided to go to Caney Lake instead since it is much closer. Ran by Brown's Landing to get shiners and a biscuit. (Note: If you go to Caney Lake on Monday, Hook's Marina store at the spillway is CLOSED every Monday. Have to go to Brown's to get shiners.) Got to the ramp at the spillway about 9:00 and was fishing by 9:30. I fished until about 2:45.
I was glad I bought a few shiners. I caught 10 crappie and 8 of them came off of shiners. Caught the other 2 on a BG electric chicken with Slab Sauce applied. I tried 6 different colors of jigs (all with Slab Sauce) and nothing. Those finicky fish just wouldn't hit a jig today. Surface temp for water was 45.6 degrees. Wind blowing just a little from time to time. Perfect fishing conditions. Fish were caught 38 feet deep in 40 feet of water. No monsters, but all eaters.
Over all, the day was perfect. Got away from the house, scratched that fishing itch I had, and Mrs. Diane is frying some of those fish up even as I type up this report. Just don't get any mo better. The Lord is good!
