I have a 410 snake tamer that I use when the dog and I go to trail deer. many times during early season I have ejected the slug for the blood trail and slipped a #6 in the to take care of a snake

I have used most of the above mentioned, 410, 20 gauge, 12 gauge and 22LR. My personal preference is the 22LR pistol for 2 reasons, 1.The ammo is the cheapest and 2.The pistol is easier to carry than a shotgun. My second choice would be the 12 gauge shotgun for the simple matter that it is easier to find 12 gauge shells than 410 or even 20 gauge sometimes.

That is most certainly true. I know the ones that will hurt people and dogs. The poisonous snakes have a pupil that resembles a cats eye - oblong shape with peaked ends, like a slit. Non-venomous snakes have round pupils. Whatever I shoot, I look them in the eyes.

Chicken snakes aren't poisonous but every one that I have caught in the bird pen has died of lead poison!

I carry an old 9mm S&W with rat shot when I'm at the camp. Only because I don't want to shoot rat shot out of any of my 1911's

If I'm looking them in the eyes I'm too close!

.410 shells are $15/box here. I can shoot .22 rat shot or 9 mm cheaper! Rat shot is my choice

I have both 2 12 gauges and a .410 and have always wondered why is a .410 shell more expensive?

Not even close to being correct. Eye shape doesn't correlate to venomous in any way.
Here in the south in can be a good rule of thumb identifying pit vipers from water snakes or rat snakes, but many of the most poisonous snakes of the world have round eyes
