    Default Black Bayou Lake, Monroe

    http://www.fws.gov/northlouisiana/blackbayoulake/

    Sat., 20 Jan. 2007 Black Bayou Lake was CLEAR, despite all of the recent rains. The lake is surrounded almost entirely by forests. Beautiful water, but my partner and I could catch no crappies. First trip there in over 15 years. Similar fishing results told to me that day by friends fishing other nearby water.

    Black Bayou Lake is just north of the city of Monroe. Nice boat ramp; launch fee is $2.00, but for Golden Age Passport holders, the fee is $1.00. BIG parking lot.

    Open water can be found straight out (south) of the launch area. Currently 12 feet deep with no weeds or known obstructions other than occasional cypress trees. Remainder of lake filled with cypress trees.

    Need crappie.commers to come give us some pointers on how to get them. :-)

    Default Been there only once in 1976

    I think it was in 1976 we fished there. Caught one crappie all day and it weighed in at about 4 ozs. Never been back. Went there with my college advisor and a classmate. I graduated NLU in '77 and haven't been back in that area very often since, although I wish I could go back there and in the Ouachita River to try them again.

    Default macdru, NLU graduate

    Yes, macdru, I recall your having said you were a graduate of Northest Louisiana University. Sorry that you have not had the opportunity to return.

    I taught at NLU during the academic year of 1966-67; thereafter, I taught at LA Tech.

    Locals catch tons of big crappies in Black Bayou. I just have not been back long enough to find them there yet, plus, I have been chasing around the state having a good time on every lake I can think of. It would seem that way, anyway. Too, yesterday was a miserable day to be on the water; only a "desperate man" (there were 2 desperate men.) would venture out yesterday. When you get to a boat landing 4-5 miles out of a big town on a Sat. and find 2 other trucks/trailers, and it is around 10:00 in the morning, you sense that you might just be in deep trouble. At my age, I have become an expert at recognizing deep trouble.

    Maybe you can make the next gathering of crappie.commers, macdru. I look forward to seeing you. bryophyte

    Ray, from what you have described, I would start out fishing the same as we do Larto. If that doesn't work, I would try up in the cypress trees at different depths. Maybe try close to the trees also. I have a buddy that has a 7 acre pond that is full of cypress trees and the "very few" crappies that I have caught seem to be holding close to the trees. That might be b/c of the 8 to 10 lb bass that he had in there though!:D

    I have a friend who knows where to catch them there and in the spawn we caught 55 huge crappie one day last spring. I live just on the other side of the highway, but have not fished there in a while.

    Hey guys;

    The old timers that fish the lake catch them all year long. My cousin happen to be one but he won't tell me anything other then how he cathing them. He use a very small hair jig with a big lead head. He custom build them. He fish every tree and will fish every side of the tree to make them bite. He always catches his limit just wish he would show me a thing or two but I'm afair it will go to his grave....
