    Default Sickle hooks

Ok guys I recently started tying my own jigs and last night I put a few heads that I painted in the oven for the suggested 350 for 15 minutes. Well after I get home from work I start tying a few, on my 5th jig I notice that the hook is really flimsy? Anyone else have this problem? Is it just a defect?

They do have some flex to them when you're wrapping the thread

Yes I am used to the normal flex as I have tied maybe 50 or so but this was the first batch that I decided to cure and on the 5th one it was just all over the place

I've never noticed that but I don't cure mine. I just heat them, dip them in powder paint, and then run them through the flame for a couple of seconds to smooth out the paint and hang them to dry. The paint lasts long enough for either the fish to destroy the jig or the hooks rust and if the paint chips off the fish don't mind.

I have tied thousands of jigs and never put them in oven. The oven is for cooking cakes and pies lol

Dmb, you saying it's loose in the head or that the hook is soft? I have never had that problem with the hook it'self. Cure all mine in toaster oven at 350 for 30 min. Have had a few loose in the head if they didn't pour good.

Am I really dumb for asking this question? ^^^^ haha yes the hook itself seems to be softer than all of the others it must be some sort of defect

What brand of hooks were you using?

Sorry about the dumb, auto correct and I did not proof read. Not a dumb question at all. If they are Matzuo it could be just a bad hook. Have never had a soft one but have about three out of a hundred that have some defect. Also Eagle Claw now makes a Sickle hook that I have been pleased with. Seems their wire is just a little smaller and formed closer to normal spec thus fit mold better and super sharp. Have poured about 500 and no defective hooks.
