Grubco :: Grubco :: Mealworms
I started with 2000, so I could also fish with them too.
I was told to wet a paper towel , wring out as much as possible and spread across the top .By the time I realized there was mold in my trays the worms were dead . If using wheat bran for bedding they eat it . I have been told they will eat their own for moisture not sure . (Have found no partial worms ) I add a tray of 50 any time I need more . There are times I have thousands of bugs .
will try the potato/ carrots again . I normally feed a hundred or so to fatten up before fishing .
I keep everything in the same uncovered container.I add, two small folded in half hand towels.These hand towels seem to only attract the largest mealworms inside them.I would probably get mold too from the water mistings I give them, if it wasn't for fact that their bin is right next to the central a/c intake vent which is constantly pulling in air .
Moisture is a mealworm killer.As long as there is pleanty of bedding/food ( bran or oats ) a halved potato is adequate for moisture and my preferred method,but carrots are good also.If the worms begin giving off an ammonia odor,the bedding has become too saturated and needs be replaced.placing a couple cardboard egg cartons opened and upside down on top the bedding will give the worms and beetles a secure ,dark location( they love it ) plus it makes it easier to gather worms for fishing.
If you want to fatten them up give a bin some romaine lettuce a few days before. When I raised them I gave a lot of romaine to them and took 200 to a coffee can full in 6 months.
Just don't give it very often or the bedding will get wet and mold. I gave maybe 1 leaf a week. I am gonna try again soon and may use Chinese cabbage instead since it seems to keep forever. My main was always carrots, the really big juicing ones so I could cut big rounds that lasted a long time.
But to answer the question where to get them, I got mine from a local pet store.
