    Chapter 21.

And so it went for the next 2 weeks. William and Billy would meet most mornings at Billy’s front steps or sometimes Billy would get the jump on him and be standing there when William would raise the garage door. Billy did that just to remind him he still had more get up and go than the older man, William assumed. On William’s part, he was feeling better and better now that his iron had built back up and for the last week, he didn’t even bother driving around and just walked with Billy through the woods to save the trip across the little lake for Billy. Matter of fact, William had gotten so strong, the two of them would mock up an argument over who would take the first turn on the paddle. William’s casting prowess had come back strong and he’d gotten back in his swing and had a chance to show the young buck most days as it should be. On Billy’s part, his boat handling skills had improved so much you couldn’t tell his work from that of a full grown man. He was still learning on the fish, but it seemed to ...

In those tales and fables written by venerable old friends, we hear stories of ancient rivers and streams brimming with hungry trout ready to eat any hapless bug floating downstream through a foam line or seam between fast water and slow. Such was a day on the St. Joe River of northern Idaho. Don't get me wrong though, while those highly educated cutthroat were sipping dries, they were also ferociously attacking small streamers, and they were tempted out of some 8-12 foot deep pools to do so. ...

Whether your long lining, spider rigging, or pulling cranks you need a rod thats suited to that style of fishing. I had been using B'n'M PST's for pulling crank baits and they are a great rod for this....just the right amount of stiffness etc. But I tried using them for spider rigging as some ...

    Chapter 17

Billy couldn’t quit smiling the entire trip home. “Mr. Baker, I can’t believe you got me a boat”. “I didn’t get you a boat Billy, I’m expecting you to earn it. There’s a lot of stuff we need to do around your house and I’m expecting you to help me with it. That and I want those fishing reports to keep coming. But now, don’t get ahead of yourself. We’ve got some stuff to do to the boat too and some things I’ll need to show you before you get turned loose with it.” “Oh, you can’t count on me Mr. Baker.”

They drove on with Billy grinning ear to ear and Mr. Baker telling fishing stories. They were almost home when Billy remembered the box Mr. Make Do had given him. He slid it into his lap and pulled ...

During my short time so far on Crappie.com I have been amazed at the enthusiasm shown toward crappie fishing. Now I know that a lot of people have hobbies that they are passionate about (myself included) but it appears that most of us Crappie fisherman are fanatics. The time that some spend on the water is just amazing. It makes me long for the days I can get the chance to do the same.

    Chapter 13.

Mr. Baker put away the tools and went in the house. He was surprised he wasn’t any more tired than he was. He kissed Ann on the cheek and told her that the two things on her list could be crossed off and that it only cost $37 dollars. “But I noticed a few other things that needed to be done. The front door sticks a little and there’s a ceiling fan in a box in the hallway. Guess it needs to be installed somewhere. Judging by the looks of that A/C, I’m sure the filters need changing and somebody ought to take a look at the furnace and drain the hot water heater. Not a lot of routine maintenance has gone on over there I’m thinking.” “Thanks Billy. Was Billy any help”. William’s eyes lit up as he described all they’d done and how Billy listened and what he did. Ann pretended to listen, but studied his expressions and gestures more than the details. “Well good then. Now, you go in there in the living room and rest. I’ll bring you dinner in a little bit and we’ll turn in ...

I can't tell you when I first saw the rod, because I can't remember when I first started fishing. I'm sure it was sometime before I could walk. My first memory of the rod was seeing it stacked in the corner of dad's closet with about six or seven others. It was wrapped in khaki colored muslin with a fabric tie string and had that special "old" smell. I asked dad where he got the rods and he told me they were his fathers. His dad left home one day and never came back, so dad inherited the rods. I always figured they were made circa 1917, but I think pre-WWII would be more accurate. They were all spit bamboo. One was a Southbend and one was a Montaque Flash. The others were names I don't remember.

    Chapter 9

William and Billy went back at it. Billy climbed back up on the boat and William noticed he’d remember what he’d been shown. Billy moved to the front deck and set up on the starboard rod locker and opened the first box labeled fishing. This was the part he’d been looking forward to but after the story he’d just heard, he wasn’t quite as upbeat as he was earlier. “What’s in there Billy?” “Looks like jig heads to me Mr. Baker. Lots of them”. “Oh yeah, that’s my spares and duplicates box. Scoot it over this way and I’ll get it. It’s heavy though”. Billy did as asked but had to reposition himself for enough bracing to scoot it over. “Billy, you ever fish much?” “Sometimes Mr. Baker, but I don’t have ...

Of all the techniques used to catch crappie none is more technical as spider rigging. It takes multiple rods, reels, and rod holders working in sync with electronics and trolling motor. When used correctly spider rigging will position the lures in a spread out area covering the complete strike zone where the crappie are located.

If done correctly, a spider rig not only catches a lot of crappie, but big ones. Of course this technique requires having ...

    Chapter 5

William Baker had heard that determination in her voice many times before. There had first been Joe. Joe was the friend of the neighbor’s kids whose Dad died when Joe was in the 10th grade. Ann had seen to it that he was always included when manly things needed doing with William and that was even before they had kids of his own. Next was Tom, their oldest son Robert’s best friend. Tom’s mother died of cancer early on and Ann had stepped in to be his part time mother until Robert and Tom went off to ...

We pull them through dark holes in a white desert like gems from a forgotten tomb. Many-faceted gems at that. Turn one in the light and it reflects various shades of green, pearl, purple, steel and blue. Calicos, strawberry bass, papermouths, specs -- crappies have as many names as America has regions. And since crappies persist in about 40 of the Lower 48 states, they’re subject to treatment by every regional dialect. Thus the long list of ...

"You've got to believe your electronics". That's what I was telling myself on a short after work trip to the lake this spring. I had been working a jig along a secondary ditch trying to find some post spawn bass grouped up, when I looked at my SI unit and saw what appeared to be bluegill beds. Thing was, I was out off the bank a good 150 feet or ...

    Chapter 1

It had been 3 years ago almost to the day when William Baker turned in his paperwork for his retirement after 42 years on the job as a machinist in a union shop. It had been a hard career, filled with overtime, missed opportunities and lost moments, but he was finally shed of having to be somewhere 6 days a week. The 2600 square foot house that his wife, Ann, dearly loved and the shop or man cave as he like to call it along with the 12 acres of land were all paid for. His two children, Robert and Susan were all grown up, married with children of their own and doing well for themselves. Susan was a real estate agent 7 states away in Virginia and had 2 little girls that were the light of any room they graced. Robert was closer ...
