Default Research Project Volunteers Needed. Jonathan Creek KY LAKE March 23 11:30- 3:00

Emily Freeman with Murray State University is starting a new research project on Kentucky Lake Crappie. To make the project successful they are hoping to get some help from crappie anglers. The project is evaluating the crappie spawn at Jonathan Creek, and specifically they want to track the status of the spawn using examinations of the fish caught by anglers. Their results will then be compared with the results of KDFWR larval, juvenile, and fall trapnet samples to see if there is a correlation. This research could help answer the question of why some spawns spawns are bad and others are good. KDFWR fully supports this research. The folks at Sportsmans Lodge on Jonathan Creek have graciously offered the use of their fish cleaning station for this project. The first sampling date will be on March 23rd from 1:30- 3:00 pm. If you would like to help with this project you simply need to fish jonathan creek that day, catch some crappie (either species, either sex), and bring them to the fish cleaning station during that time period. The fish cleaning station is located on the sportsmans lodge dock so it can be accessed easily on the water. Emily and her crew will need to weigh and measure the fish, remove the otoliths (ear bones), and remove the gonadal tissue (eggs, testes). If you'd like they will then filet the fish for you or simply return the gutted fish to you. The fish can be caught from any where in jonathan creek at any time that day, but they will only be there to collect samples during that 1:30-3:00 pm time frame. Emily has included her contact information (417 536 9771, [email protected]) on a flyer which you may have seen at the local tackle shops, so feel free to contact her if you have any questions or just want to let her know that you'll be there to help. Emily will be needing fish several times this year to be able to track the spawn over time, so she and I will be advertising those dates as they come up. Thanks in advance for your help and feel free to reach out to me or her with questions.
