Looks great. I wish I had that true three pounder. I caught one this year that was close, but never put a three pounder in the boat. I got years to keep trying God willin...

Who'd a thunk it a 3lb Crappie in Jacobson Park Lake :DOriginally Posted by wayne wallen
I bet you were a bit surprised, yourself ... huh ?? Looks to be a Black Crappie, by the markings ... and that would make it a even greater accomplishment !!
I like the "realistic" look, too ... with the tail and fins left tattered.
I've caught two nice Crappie from JPL ... but, nothing over 2lbs. Caught both of them from right next to the support posts of those veranda/walkout piers. Just dropped a crappie jig down next to the posts, and bam ... fish on :D And, since I didn't really want to fool with cleaning just two fish, I gave them to a elderly black lady fishing just down the bank from me. She had a couple of small cats and a few handsized Bluegill, and the two Crappie made her a nice haul.
I may have to venture back there, and try my luck again :p ... it's only a couple of miles down the road

yes, i was suprised cp. i got her on a tube and a cork over in the corner by the bathrooms. i have caught some nice crappie there before but not that nice. do black and white crappie inter spawn? this fish has both characteristics. the paint job isnt dead on when she was alive. at a distance she did have vert. lines but the dorsal fins matched a black.
on another trip i was trying some goldfish feeders for bait and as soon as it hit the water i hooked a 25-30lb carp. about 30min later on 6lb test i got it to the bank when the hook came out. that was a big suprise also.
Black and White Crappie can (& do) interbreed ... and it seems as though they do so, more often, in small bodies of water. Take, for instance, the current state record Crappie:Originally Posted by wayne wallen

This fish was considered for a World Record (Black Crappie) ... until it was determined that it was, indeed, a naturally occuring hybrid. The IGFA does not recognize naturally occuring crossbreeds, for record status. KY does not distinguish between species of Crappie, for record status, nor does it disallow hybrids ... so it's now recognized as the official State Record Crappie.
Funny you should mention Carp ... my biggest ever came from JPL. Can't call a weight on it, but it was about 40-45" long. That was over 30yrs ago :p and I don't remember whether I was using 6lb or 8lb test line ... but, I do remember I was using a Zebco 33 on a 5.5ft fiberglass rod. The fish took off and went almost to the other side of the lake, almost unspooling my reel :D I finally got the fish to come back, and had to do the "backpeddle up the bank, drag the fish onto shore" landing technique ... since I didn't have a net  and wasn't about to get wet/muddy going into the water after it
The length is a guesstimate ... I remember holding the fish up, with the eyes about waist high, and the tail touched the ground. Just about the time I got the fish in, and was holding it up to see how big it was ... a couple that I ran around with showed up. He was amazed, and she was scared to death of it .... LOL!! (she'd never seen a fish that big, up close and personal)
