I've never fished Taylorsville, and only Green once, but am reading this thead and the similar thread about Green with interest...

We can all speculate about what should be done to make the crappie fishing better, aside from not over-fishing a lake. But it seems to me that if lots of 8-9" fish are being caught and no keepers, then something like a slot limit might be worth a try. Not many people want to mess with cleaning 9.5" crappie, but maybe it wouldn't be so bad to let them have them, and throw back most of the 12"+ fish.

The problem with crappie fishing is we like to eat them too much

My naive opinion on Taylorsville. It’s an absolute fish factory! That being said, I feel a very large percentage of the legal fish are being harvested much faster the last few years. There used to be an abundance of 8.5 - 8.75 inch fish when the limit was 9in. Now there are a lot of 9.5-9.75 inchers. I feel like the fish are healthy and grow just fine with abundant numbers. The harvest rate is affecting the ratio of keepers:shorts.

I live close by taylorsville lake. Grew up fishing this lake. The last 2-3 years this lake has been fished harder than I've ever seen. Noticing that a there are more and more license plates from out of state. This is the power of the internet. Soon as one person catches a limit of nice crappie and post it to the internet the whole state and surrounding states flock to Tville. The last few weeks I've caught maybe 50-70 crappie just fishing a few hours here and there. Only 2 keeprs. Im definitely not an expert crappie fisherman but enjoy being on the water. These crappie tournaments, with experts fishing in them, are weighing in good numbers. I feel like the crappie are there but its going to take a couple more years to produce fish for the average fisherman like myself. Just for an example of how hard the lake was fished last year... People were waiting over an hour to get on and/or leave the lake. At those times I didnt even bother taking the boat out. Fished from the bank and picked up enough crappie for supper. Lol May not be getting many for supper this year. Not sure how fast a crappie will grow but maybe this fall there will be some kept for the table.

Green fish makes a good point about harvest rate. The last 2 years, I have seen many posts on this site of guys taking 4-5 people fishing and all keeping their limit, seemingly everytime they went. That is legal yes, but is it responsible? I think the COVID shutdown increased the number of boats on the water too. Just my 2 cents. Sometimes we have to police ourselves.

    Couldn't agree more.

just because that's what is allowed, doesn't mean one needs to keep a limit day after day...

But these days, you know, everyone has this sense of 'entitlement'...smh

Add in the new crazy electronics and multiply by the pandemic and you have our current situation most everywheres...
