    Default Cave Run Today

Was going to head to Taylorsville this morning but couldn't locate a travel partner short notice, so I took a solo trip to Cave Run. Started slow but kept searching, spider rigging with jigs and minnows. Found fish is 26 to 30 fow 13 to 16 feet deep, water was stained 57 degrees, the wind and boat traffic was horrendous. I only fished a few hours and ended up with 12 nice crappie, several dinks and a 17 1/2 in bass. Best color was watermelon/chartreuse, the fish are full of eggs and slammed my rods when they hit. No pics this time too windy to look away lol. Thanks for reading and God Bless

Sounds like you had fun even with all the boat traffic!

Great persistence for sure. I hate heavy boat traffic.

    Good Job, Bigger !!

Looks like with the water temps still that low and the weather remaining cool for awhile, the Cave Run fish are still a week or so behind schedule. Seems to be a common theme in the Central KY lakes (Taylorsville, Green, Cave Run, Cumberland).

We experienced the "slamming" of our jigs, too. Several fish short-lined me and nearly jerked the rod out of my hand when casting at Taylorsville, week before last. Even those that hit well out away from the boat didn't "thump" ... they "slammed" !! There was NO DOUBT you had a hit !!

What’s a decent crappie at Cave Run? Never fished it. 10-12 inch an average keeper?

There is no "size limit" at Cave Run ... it has a 20/person/day creel limit (State Regs). A "decent" Crappie at Cave Run is anything big enough to take home & clean, in my book.

I have swung and missed twice there this year. I prefer floating minnows under bobbers. I assume they just are to deep still.

Cave Run can be a really tough lake to figure out, finding structure that people don't fish to death is a big help. I will sometimes do lots of searching before I ever drop the first line.
