    Default Rough River Lake

I’ve got plans for my first fishing trip of the year at Rough River Lake this Sunday. I’m not much of a crappie fisherman, but I’ve been trying to get better at it the past few years. Do any of you have any tips to share like colors to try or depth to fish? I’m going to try to get some minnows, but I’ll be relying on jigs mostly. We are going to try fishing some standing timber back in a long creek arm. I’ve caught crappie in this spot in the fall and winter before, so I know it holds fish. Any tips are appreciated!

We just got a hard rain here causing the lake to go up ~3' since yesterday and more rain forecasted for saturday so water conditions in back in the creeks is going to be muddy. With that said, my best color on Rough when it is stained or muddy is Black/Pink or Black/Chart. I would fish the timber with a slip float and set the depth to about 1' off the bottom then work my up until I found the sweet spot. I also like to cast past the timber and slowly bring the jig to it. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the information. I’m prepared for a tough bite on Sunday. I’m just glad to get the boat out. I’m glad I bought some slip floats now!

I went to rough river lake yesterday and it's super muddy, probably 1 inch or less of visibility.

After all the rain we decided to wait on Rough until it clears up a bit. I was disappointed, but I did manage some nice crappie out of a farm pond.

I went with Pcdims above Saturday and Sunday. Did great Saturday caught about 35 nice fish but Sunday we only caught 12. The water was stained pretty bad around Axtel and super muddy around Peter cave.
