    Default Fatheads vs. shiners?

Given the choice between the two, which do you prefer?
I love shiners for their size and hardiness. Unfortunately only get them around Ky or Barkley lakes.

I've had just the opposite experience. But, I've only dealt with Shiners down in Tenn, and that was decades ago. They just didn't seem to be very hardy .... very soft & died quickly on the hook vs Fatheads (Tuffies).

Differences in opinion are what make good discussions. If we all agreed on everything there would be nothing to talk about.
We have had good luck with shiners using lots of ice and aeration on them.

I have to agree with Pappy, the tuffies are the best. They are a more aggressive swimmer in the water and take very little maintenance to keep alive. I keep them in a Styrofoam insulated minnow bucket and the don't need attention for at least 3 hours. Just change the water after around 3 hours and they are happy. No ice, aerator. When it's hot, (90 degrees) I may add a few cubes of ice, but that's it. Have caught 3 crappie off the same minnow using tuffies. They are truly 'tuffies'. All they had in SC was shiner's when I was there. Had my buddies from KY bring down tuffies when they came down to fish. Made a big difference.

Maybe my experience is different because I've only used shiners in cool or cold water. Never in summer.

Back when I fished Barren more I’d always stop at J&L Bait shop. The lady that runs the place talked me into trying some. I got several dozen of each and gave them an equal chance. My buddy an I spider rigged an we used shiners on two rods and fat heads on the other two rods. On that day fat heads won hands down.
