    Update!

Mason went home last night with his jaw wired shut and the bullet still in his neck. I guess they will deal with it later if need be.

I want to thank all the members here who have called and PM/texted me saying they are thinking and praying for our community. It is going to be tough on the community as the funerals roll around. There have been lots of schools and communities who have showed their respect by wearing our school colors to their schools and having special services at their schools.

Our county has about 30K citizens but our largest town is Benton at 4500. The county still has the small town/country feel but most everybody knows somebody affected by this.

Today the students were allowed to retrieve their personal belongings that were left when they fled the shooting. My wife said there were backpacks and purses that had bullet holes in them that the kids had no idea about. It could have been way worse.

I'm one of the last people on here who could be held up as a christian example to others but I've done a lot of praying and soul-searching this week. Our 2 kids and 2 grandkids have all been in public schools. Missy Jenkins, who was shot and paralyzed in the Heath High School shooting 20 years ago, has sat in our living room in her wheelchair as a friend of my son's several years ago. She spoke to kids in our county schools about her experiences a couple of weeks ago. Now they know personally how Heath felt.

This type of thing never happened in my school days and you never heard of such until about twenty years ago as mrdux illustrated. I do believe that to some extent violent video games and social media help to fuel some of these festering situations... even such as the bullying mentioned earlier. These types of games and social anxiety serve well as combustion chambers, outlets and as training mechanisms for troubled young people until that one certain day when it all escalates to just these (all too frequent) hasty acts of stupidity that affect so many innocent lives. Prayers and condolences are with all who were and will be affected by such violent acts.

I don't want this post to be construed as political because it isn't meant that way.

Governor Matt Blevin signed a proclamation of a day of prayer for those affected by the school shooting for January 28. The video link is the entire event at the Marshall County Children's Art Center in Benton. If you want to just hear Gov Blevin's words you can forward to the 12:30 mark. My wife is on the board of the Arts Center and was there. She spent many minutes talking to the Gov and Lt Gov and was so impressed with their humble concern for the families and the community.
