Benji Kinman does have a really nice ramp now. KDRWR recently built a new ramp and parking area. I checked it out (from the bank) a couple weekends ago. You shouldn't have any problem getting your boat in there. I haven't fished it yet but plan on hitting it soon. I have heard reports of some nice crappie being caught there.

KyBruce, I'll let you know if I find a bait source near Boltz. I can get them here some days, but when they decide to open, it's at least 9:30am in the morning. No way to get an early start this way. FYI,I have a 16ft aluminum, Lowe's Stryker, 40HP Merc., simple boat, but good or panfishing. I still work during the week, so probably will be there on a weekend. I really like Taylorsville, but don't want to be there on a Weekend during Crappie time.

Perchjerker, I'm a weekender too. I'll keep an eye out for you. I'm in a Tan colored Ranger Cherokee 117 75 Mercury. Not fancy either but serves me well.

KyBruce, I drove down today to Boltz today. The gas station beside Tire Discounters has minnows but they are 20 cents each($2.40/dozen). They are in an aquarium. I did take a jig an casted our from the dock there, didn't catch much, 2 crappie, one about 11" the other about 9", and what I think was a saugeye, about an 17". I know it looked like a Walleye.

I'd say that's fairly promising. I've never caught a crappie approaching 11" there. Maybe they have grown. They did stock Saugeye there about 2 years back. Boltz, AJ Jolly, Bullock Pen - I believe they all were stocked with Saugeye. They are probably harvestable by now.

Just now getting around to posting. We fished it Sunday. The fishing forecast from KDFWR is spot on. We caught plenty. Most in the 8-10" range. We kept 26 and threw back that many. We used jigs tipped with minnows. Seemed to like blue/black with chartreuse tail. Oh and my buddy did catch one saugeye 14" long.

KyBruce, I now realize I saw you there. I was the guy on the dock. I had some poles out with wax worms(caught 2 very little bream), but spent most my time casting a jig ( for over 2 hours, but it was a nice day). Had a lot of problems with lines broken off from the dock getting tangled in my jig. But, when I have time, will get back up there with my boat and try to figure out the depth/area I need to fish. Will need a couple trips to figure this out at least. Glad you and you partner had a good day. The larger 1 crappie I caught was pretty skinny. The smaller one looked a lot better. Both the crappie and saugeye are back in the lake.

Perchjerker108, I wish I had known it was you. You asked how deep I thought I'd have to fish. Would like to have talked more. Anyway, they were in 18-20 foot of water 12-15 feet deep. We did best back near the campground. I noticed they are skinny fish. I think that's from over population. At least that's what I've been told. We'll probably go back sometime as we had fun catching. Maybe we'll see you then.

Largemouth Bass will be transferred to Boltz Lake from Beaver Lake, Copied this from another website forum. Hopefully, it will not affect the crappie fishing there.

Bass Removal Set for Anderson County’s Beaver Lake

The Fisheries Division of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources plans to remove smaller largemouth bass from Beaver Lake in Anderson County to improve the quality of bass and sunfish. The removed bass will be released into Boltz Lake in Grant County and Taylorsville Lake in Spencer, Anderson and Nelson counties.

“The largemouth bass are becoming too crowded in Beaver Lake, which is negatively impacting the size structure of the bass population,” said David Baker, Central Fisheries District biologist for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. “We’ve had great bass spawns in the last couple of years, especially last year. We want to be proactive.”

Baker said a similar removal of largemouth bass from Beaver Lake in 2011 did wonders for the largemouth bass and bluegill populations. “The idea is to reduce the density of small largemouth bass to improve growth rates,” he said. “We saw the bluegill populations take off after our last bass removal. The number of 6-inch and larger bluegill in the lake quadrupled.”

Baker also said the largemouth bass benefitted to the point that Beaver Lake received an excellent rating for largemouth bass in the 2017 Fishing Forecast. This is the first time in 16 years the lake received the top rating.

“The removal project did what it was supposed to do,” Baker said. “It helped drive the sunfish management goals and improved the largemouth bass population.”

The Beaver Lake bass removal project will begin next week.Bass Removal Set for Anderson County’s Beaver Lake

    Interesting.

I'd say it can't hurt, and probably help the crappie within a couple of years. There's lots of small crappie for bass to eat there. I'm not sure what the problem is with sunfish in the current lake though. You would think if there were lots of small sunfish there, the bass would have plenty to eat.
