A very good write up indeed, enjoyed reading that, Doug. At least someone's catching nice bluegills and redears, I've struggled so far.
The fishing was great, the company 2nd to none but the catching left something to be desired. Chaunc and his "little Brother" Rich were down last week for some gill and redear fishing.
We had a great day Thursday on Barkley with a mixed bag of redears, gills and catfish. We weren't targeting the catfish but it seems they targeted us.
Sunday we got out on KY with one eye on the bobber and one eye on the weather radar. The lake was rough but I was able to get to a protected cove that others must have decided was not worth the effort or boat ride to try. Our 1st pass thru the area produced ZERO. I thought this is not good. Thankfully we stayed and just fan-cast the area and started picking up some gills. The small female to big bull male ratio was pretty much one-to-one. I was throwing a drop-shot with a piece of nightcrawler that was producing nothing. Kenny and Rich were casting VERY small jigs tipped with a wax worm under small bobbers and were catching several. I ended up just laying my rod down and went into guide mode of taking fish off their hooks and helping make sure the baits were available. Once the gills slowed down, the catfish took over. We kept a few of those and lost some big ones either at the boat by pulling off or breaking the line.
After 4 hours or so of watching black clouds blow over and red/yellow move our way on radar, we tried a couple of other spots. The 1st had fish but was in the wind and it was impossible to keep the bows out of our lines PLUS the catfish were there also. We had a very nice guy from the creel survey check and interview us while we were anchored. He was fighting to keep his boat positioned near us. I will say he was a total pro and a super nice young man.
We moved into a more protected area near some resorts and every spot I wanted to fish had one or more boats already there fishing. We fished some banks with no success. The clouds were not in our favor so I decided we had better get back to our launch point before we got our butts wet. Running north we could see a solid wall of rain. We got about 1/4 mile from the mouth of the cove we launched from and it opened up. The visual of liquid and a boot came to mind. Rain gear was an afterthought at that point.
We got loaded up and set a time to go to Murray for supper. My wife and I came back to Aurora to pick up Kenny and Rich. I stopped to visit Wilbur, his beautiful daughter (must have her Mother's looks)and son-in-law at their rental near Chaunc's. I tried to point them in the general direction of some fish and gave them what wax worms I had left. My gill pursuits are over. Time to break out the crankbait gear.
We had a wonderful meal in Murray and laughed till our sides hurt. Kenny and Rich have been calling me their Brother from a different Mother. My wife got the label of Sister also. We both wear that as a badge of honor. I can't imagine having 2 more fun days of fishing and companionship. I made a bunch of permanent friends with folks I met in PA when I was in taxidermy school there. Kenny and Rich will always have a place in my circle of friends--PA or not.

My hangouts have produced little, I have really struggled. The ones I've managed to boat have been nice fish but the numbers aren't there...the catfish have been stretching my line though. I'm wondering if the big spawn is still to come? I'm going to try this coming weekend, hopefully they'll be around because it's getting late in the traditional spawning season.
Good read. I'm headed out tomorrow cranking. Let you know how it goes. Will send up a prayer for safe traveling on their way home.

Great pics & story. Sounds like you guys had a blast. Good Times.
Cant thank you enough for taking us out those two days. We both had a blast fishing and spending time with you and Vickie. If I don't make the fall get together, i'll see you guys next march, unless you come up and do some big water walleye fishing with me in September. Thanks for another memorable trip this year. And sorry I missed you Wilbur. Good luck and enjoy your family time down there. I did.
Great read, sounds like a good time.
