Thanks to my buddy, Carl (member name cjpar3) ... I no longer have a tangled mess of rods/lines when transporting my rods in the rod locker of my boat. He got me some BPS rod socks : Bass Pro Shops® Adjustable Rod Sock | Bass Pro Shops
I, also, got a BPS card for retirement ... and purchased more of them.
Now ... you DO have to keep hooks away from the "sock", as they will get hung into the material (and are a pain to get out ... yep, been there )
And even though they say they'll work on a 7' rod ... they don't quite make it on my one piece 7' Bionic Blade, even with the strap extended all the way out. I "can" pull the strap down (it's elastic) & hook it around the reel handle, but that puts a bend in the rod tip ... so I only do that when transporting a bunch of rods at one time, and only during the period of transport.
This was my easiest option, seeing as how my rod locker is basically the front left 2/3's of my 16ft boat, and the interior area curves with the bow of the boat, so putting in PVC pipe or any other type of divider would be difficult to do. A 7' one piece rod is the longest rod I have. I have transported up to 8 rods at one time, not all of which had "socks" on them, and line tangles were non-existent.
There are other "sizes" & brands ... some of which have the elastic straps, while others are more along the "sleeve" style ( Bass Pro Shops® XTS® Rod Socks | Bass Pro Shops ) And BPS is not the only brand. Some are advertised as "rod gloves", "rod slicks", "rod wraps", etc. (depending on mfg brand). Some are color coded for length of rod, and/or type of rod (baitcasting or spinning). Prices seem to range between ~ $4 to ~$15 each, depending on size & brand (or where you purchase them).
The black BPS socks, that I have, are a little over 4' long (sleeve part) with the adjustable elastic strap (when not extended is ~8" more) ... which can be extended to a total length of ~18" before any stretching occurs.
You will want to know the length of your rods, whether one piece or when broken down, so that the proper style/size/length can be purchased. And it's probably better to have one "too long", than one that's shorter than needed ... and I say that because I don't always stretch the strap & hook it to the reel/handle, but often just slip the sock over the rod & put it in the locker, simply because I'm going to remove them (as needed) and don't want the rod tips under tension when not in use.
