Good pics! Can you give us some info on how deep and what you used, crawlers or red wigglers? Kentucky Lake shellcracker/bluegill spawn appears to be way behind an it's hard to figure them out right now. Didn't see any bluegills, did you catch any good ones. Thanks for the post, encouraging.

Heading down to KY next Monday through Wednesday. Will be in staying up at Malcolm Creek Resort. Caught a good number of redears a couple weeks ago but looking to get into them heavy next week. Strange thing is every one of mine looked real orange color not dark like yours. Mine had the tail tail red ear but the bodies were not dark like yours. Almost looked like a sun fish except for the fact they were huge and had the red ear. Strange.

Jigboy .... isn't the orange bellied Shellcracker a male & the yellow bellied ones a female ?? Perhaps the ones you caught were a little more "pre-spawn" than the ones pictured ... and possibly males, where the pictured ones look to be mostly preggy females ?? Belly color also looks to be a bit faded out, possibly from being dead for awhile

I'm not sure either but when I say orange, I mean orange all over. From heat to tail, from top to bottom. I only took one picture of one that went 15 ounces but it was right at dark and you can't tell anything about the color at all. It was strange because every single one was the same color. Literally when I pulled the first one in I told my wife it was a huge sunfish. After I caught another one I looked more carefully and could see the red along the ear. We kept 10 to 15 I guess and they were all over a half pound with the one almost one pound. next time I will get some pictures if I catch more like it. I was also like you and thought maybe they are just that color earlier before the spawn but I am guessing.

The ones I caught were in dressed in Bourbon Street colors so not sure if they were male, female, or shemales. Strange fish but tasted good.
