spawning bank

What do you typically consider a "spawning bank"? i.e. a south facing , gently slopping gravel bank
I am curious. The example given is some of what I seen around here, but also see a variety.

Anytime I see a shallow area that has either a sand or small pebble bottom with close proximity to a drop-off-I get real interested.
