    Default Kayak suggestions

Hi all. New dude here so please bear with me as I am sure my question has been to death already.

I have been looking into kayak fishing for a while now and am looking for suggestions for a good kayak that would be a decent river and small open water boat. I want to fish a couple small to medium sized rivers with moderate current at best and a some smaller lakes with the largest being about 700 acres or so. As far as lakes go I would mostly want to hit smaller ones roughly a hundred acres or less.
I have some kayak experience ( whitewater out west and some duck hunting out of a two man canvas kayak from years ago ) so I understand the different styles of boat and the waters they are designed for. I also have a ton of canoe experience both paddling and fishing.

I was looking at a Coosa because I will mostly want to fish a small local river with lots of snags and whatnot to maneuver around and I think the Coosa would be good for that. My concern is how well the Coosa or similar designed boat would track in open water. I'm 6'3" and 250 pounds and would like a boat that's stable and is relatively easy to anchor up in a mild to moderate current.

    Thank You for any suggestions.

Coosa is great for the river, but since your also wanting to crossover to some flat water I would suggest the Coosa HD. Also checkout the Cruise and Kilroy, but I think he Coosa HD will be a better fit. As always, try to paddle them, as you will know better after testing them out.

I had a Coosa, briefly. I mainly fish small lakes and the Coosa, which is made for quick maneuvers in rivers, just stunk for me. The tracking is terrible, wind blows it around like crazy, and it was a chore to paddle any distance.

I traded it off and ended up with a Jackson Tripper 12 (rec version of the Kilroy). I added some fishing goodies and am extremely happy with it.

At at your size you may also want to look at the Jackson Big Rig.

I have owned two Coosa's. My sons still have them. They are for rivers only...IMHO. On a lake they will spin like a top in a small breeze. Many in the kayaking community own a river yak and a lake yak.

You might look at the Wilderness Systems Ride 115. Depending on how you adjust the seat they paddle good on the river or lake...according to what several people say. I have the Ride 135 and it fishes great just too slow for the river current. The Perception Pescador or Wilderness Tarpon 10' models paddle good and handle good. I borrowed a friends and really like it, should work on the lake or river.
