Just got my yak trying to get it rigged up
Went out Saturday to Lake Robinson hoping to haul in some crappie, but they didn't cooperate.

Fished from a kayak for thirty years. I have the old closed cockpit type that was pretty much the only type around when I got mine. As I get older it is starting to get uncomfortable, cramps and other old age problems like old bladder is making it less enjoyable. I spend more time fishing from the bank now which brings back childhood memories. I have made a few upgrades this year to make the kayak more comfortable. I removed part of the skirt system for more leg room, added a rudder for easier paddling, and got a comfortable seat.
I have considered getting one of the new models that have no cockpit but here are a few advantages I would lose. First is the safety of a closed cockpit is appealing. I would not be afraid to go out in any kind of rough water my local lakes can develop. Tipping over does not throw you out and 13 foot of closed kayak means the front end pops out of waves. Having a closed cockpit means you will stay dry in rough water. Most of the kayak is one big dry compartment. While the old style kayaks are hard to steer they turn easily while not moving forward.
I could afford a boat but you can't hang a bass boat on the wall of your garage. I have had boats and I hate the maintenance and hassle of storage. If I need a boat it is cheaper and easier to hire a guide. A kayak is a testament to the joys of a simple life.
