I agree with you on the new seats. Already had a failure on mine that had to go back for warranty - in fact I've noticed a handful of fit & finish issues on their latest line.
That is some nice work you did there! Looks comfortable & reliable!
First let me say I have nothing against Hobie's newer seats and this thread is just to show how I use my Airpro Max on my Adventure.
I recently purchased a used Hobie Adventure. I wanted this kayak to use on some of the long runs I make on a few lakes I fish to get to the backwaters. With this being a foot propelled fishing kayak is would be great to use for these runs. Knowing the kayak is only a little under 28'' wide, the first thing I ordered were the Hobie Sidekick ama outrigger kit. At $179 the kit isn't what it should be (will get to that) but with using outriggers on other kayaks I knew they really helped to make a kayak stable. Once getting the kayak home I got to looking at the new AirPro seat I had just bought from my Wilderness Ride. I have spent many hours in this seat and I love the way it helps with my back and hip and after spending a few hours in it I can still stand up after fishing. So I took the AirPro and set it on top of the Adventure. Not a bad fit I thought and with where the Sidekick installed on the kayak the back of the seat would fit right up to it and the front of the seat would end in front of the hatch so it could still open. Hobie kayak comes with many screws installed in the hull for attaching accessories and one of these screws were just behind the front legs on each side.
After a few hours of thinking on about how to make attaching points without drilling more holes into the kayak or the seat this is my finished project.
The back of the seat had a round stud on each corner. I made a bracket that would mount under the Sidekick mounting points. The bolts that come with that kit was not big enough to hold the cross pipe in place without the pipe turning. To fix this I replaced them with 1/4'' bolts and wellnuts. On this bracket I made cups where the back studs could slide into, these holds the back of the seat in place.
At the front of the seat there are also studs at the two corners with a pipe running across the seat. This is where I wanted to attach the front. I built a cross member to mount to the screws on each side of the kayak. From this I made a channel for the seat pipe to fit into.
Now to install the seat I slide in the two back studs into the cups, push the front pipe into the channel and pin it in place with quick connect pins.
The front hatch opens with no problems.
All this is just to show that you can use what you like to make your time on the water enjoyable. With this kayak being a 16'er she moves through the water with ease. So now to rename the seat for when it is on the Adventure, I call it a (WilderHobieness) seat
Hope you enjoyed,
Ronnie
