I would think 700 a little high considering the trailer. There will be some bargains. Patience can be your best friend.
Me and my father are going to look at a 14' john boat later on today and I just wanted to get some boat veterans opinions on it. We decided to look for a flat bottom boat for stability. I found this boat the title says it was made in 1978 it comes with a live well, Minn Kota Endura 46lb trolling motor with hotfoot pedal, humminbird fish finder 300TX and an anchor. To me this looks like a steal compared to other boats I have seen. But the transom looks weak and the wood under the seat looks aged and weathered like it needs to be replaced. me and my dad plan to replace the wood and he wants to add carpeting. I originally wanted a casting deck but looks like it's not in the cards right now. Is there anything I need look for other than a weak transom and holes? Overall what do you think of the boat The price is $700.

The stickers look to be 2007. If it has not been registered since then, the back taxes will have to be paid to get a current registration. They won't be much, about $3 a year or less. But you will have to get all that done before you can register it in your name.
Prices can be tricky. Around here in West Kentucky, near the lakes, for $700 that would sit for a long while. Being winter it would not even get looked at. In the spring folks drag out the old boats and decide to sell them because they want newer/bigger/faster or what ever. Last summer I priced a jon with a 25HP and a similar trolling motor on a much nicer trailer that that one for $1000. I don't know where in Kentucky you are but look at https://www.vci-classifieds.com/index.php to get an idea what something like that will fetch here in West Kentucky.

Hold on for a few more weeks unless price isn't a option. Check Craigslist a lot of us buy and sell on the list
Like everyone else I think you can do better for the money. It would take quite a bit to really fix that one up. Plus that trailer would be real suspect to me.

I'd stay as far away from that thing I could get.

Looks like a 1438. They can be had new for under $1000. Trailer can be had new for $400 something if you go with the bolt together Northern Tool or snag ya something off craigslist like a personal watercraft trailer for the price of the bolt together trailer. You would have to get a tongue extension or longer bunks to get the boat to fit. Looks like the transom wood is shot. Would needed replacing. What's the bottom look like? Is the combo worth $700? One could argue. Scrap the bad flooring and transom wood, pressure spray the boat and trailer, repack or replace the trailer bearings and maybe some paint on the trailer and it would be good to go. I would try to get it for $500-600 and argue the transom is shot and doesn't have a battery or ya would. Good 1st time fixer upper. If you get it, I would definitely fill it up with the water house to test for leaks. Leaks can be fixed with water weld or 3m 5200. Check out tinboats.net for help, ideas, etc.

I was just about to say to check the bottom of it for anything that looks like a patch or JBWeld. We got caught a few weeks out on the lake when the JBWeld patch decided it was time to be set free. No real problem as we made it back to shore fine. Just something else to look at when you are buying one is all. Good luck. I have to agree with the others though. I would try and get if for between $400.00 and 500.00. I am not sure I would go much higher to be honest.

Thank you everyone for your replies because of issues brought up in this thread we were able to get some money off of the boat. Me and my dad did want a small project to do together and this fit the bill perfectly. We checked the boat for patches and it all looks fine the transom and floor look a little rough but are solid and the trailer which was a real worry is just surface rust it hasn't rusted through anywhere. The plan for now is to paint the trailer, make a lid to the live well and add carpet. I'm sure it wont go as smooth as I hope but should be a fun father son project. I'm sure we will have lots of questions along the way. Once again thanks for all the help I hope you all have a nice day.
