i never thought a canoe could be so stable until i built outriggers out of pvc to go on it. unlike those pictured in the polynesian link above mine set right beside the canoe on each side and fold up inside or rather meet in the middle to carry in the back of my pickup. it's a 17 ft canoe and years ago i built a deal that sticks into the receiver hitch to "carry" the back of the canoe. very easy loading and unloading the canoe. i also made a rudder for the canoe that keeps the wind from blowing it all over the lake. and i built a neat trolling motor bracket that will fold to either side depending on which side you want to use the trolling motor on. i think a man could stand on the side of the canoe. it's that stable.

    Nice.

Again you're taking the original vessel and modifying to the point where is really isn't the same boat. People want a "human powered" vessel the first thing they do is put a motor on it or take an unstable boat rig all kinds of things to make up for what it lacks.

I'm saying I'd rather have a boat design with that from the start. Check out this QT Skiff designed by Jim Michalak. Everything the original poster describes would be best found in a craft similar to the QT Skiff, pram or small jon boat.

Here are the designer's own words:
I chose a size that will be easy to cartop and yet ample for two adults. The bottom is narrow for good rowing but still wide enough to allow stand-up stability, unlike a dory.
    To each his own.

I assume by "film release", you mean "Fall Release"? If so, I would not suggest taking a SOT down any part of the Gauley during the fall release (16 class IVs in 4 miles at the "middle"). I camp the middle gauley many times a year and NEVER have I seen a SOT come down during fall release levels. I've seen "Ender Waves" and "Wood's Ferry" turn into 15 foot hydraulics at those levels. I assume you would put in at Mason's branch....and you would almost HAVE to take out before Koontz Bend...I guess you might be able to take out at Bucklick branch, but I believe that is now a private access for a rafting company.

I know from earlier posts that you said you have guided, but you would have to be super familiar with this river to be even remotely safe in a SOT......A friend of mine who guides on the Gauley literally just called me about this w'end, and I asked him about taking a Coosa on it at fall release... His response: "HAHA!.....oh....wait....you're serious? No Frikkin way I [he] would do it."

At summer levels like 600 cfs it could be a fun and challenging float fish, but honestly the fishing on the gauley below the dam isn't that great anyways (it's definitely difficult).

Anyways, be safe if you do...and If you see some people with a black SUV and a big ole brindle great dane camping, then stop by for a beer and a breather!

bun, when you get my age you want a sure thing. i rode my canoe lots of miles the way it came from the factory but age told me i needed to do something to it if i were going to keep using it. yes, if you are young and in good health you want the "original" as was made. everything i added to my canoe just made it better to use. safer to use and still be a one person operation loading and unloading. you sound like a bare bow shooter but i bet if you shoot a bow you shoot either a compound or crossbow. everyone adds too. at my age i added too. i can remove everything from my canoe and it be "original" once again. as you said, to each his/her own.

olduckhunter, I definitely see where you're conning from. However, the original poster is looking to shell out cold, cash money for a new vessel, not extend the life and capability of a trusted steed. All I'm saying is if a man wants to shell out new money for a new vessel that vessel had better do exactly what you want it to. That's why you're spending the money.

It makes no sense to buy a kayak brand new then spend more money. That money could have been spend in a vessel better designed for the intended purpose.

If I had a kayak that was an old trusted steed, yeah, I would modify it for my wants and need as time went on, but this guy is talking about shelling out cash for a whole new vessel that will be inadequate for the purpose he intends. A gheenoe, skiff, pram, jon boat, or even an outrigger canoe would better serve his purposes when shelling out new money.

I own a sit in Old Town Vapor 12. Love it. The cockpit is 4ft long. The seat is comfortable for me for about 3 or 4 hours. Then I need to stand about 10 minutes. A trip to the bank to unwater, and get the next beverage ready. If you really want to stand, consider a NUCANOE. When i researched prior to buying my old town, i watched hours of video on you tube. I narrowed my search in youtube to kayak bass fishing, and went from there.

There is a kayak from Freedom Hawk Kayaks that allows the user to stand. The pictures look interesting, though Ive never seen one in person
If vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what's baby oil made from?
