This sounds interesting, but I havent heard any talk of or seen anyone kayak fishing in Alabama, is this a geographic phenom. I live in between Neely Henry and Lake Weiss, both are big crappie lakes, would this work in this area. My only fear would be getting hit by a fast moving bass boat.

So are there any crappie kayak fishermen in this area ( Gadsden Alabama ) ? If so send me a PM, I would like to get some first hand information and/or experience on how to begin.

keller your fears can be founded. I'm nervous on the lakes in my 15' aluminum boat with some of the fast moving bass boats. It seems the worst time is when it is cold and they are hunkered down behind the windshield trying to keep warm. It is kind of new to most inland areas. It is more popular in the coastal areas but growing inland all the time. A lot of people will post a flag on the rear of their yak to make themselves more visible. It's not for everyone but I sure do enjoy it.

I use flags, lights, bright colored clothing, and reflective stickers on my yak.
If vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what's baby oil made from?

That's why ya' pack a big gun. A shot acrost the bow
    is a maritime tradition!

Seriously, a compressed air signal horn works well.
I keep one at hand and blast it at the slightest whim.

The worst incident I've had so far was mildy annoying.
I was trolling crank baits in South Sauty creek channel
on lake Guntersville last Summer. The captain of a
relatively large cabin cruiser took an interest in what
I was doing so far from shore. He buzzed about 50 feet
from me while at half-plane. The wake was very large,
but my boat rode it out like surf. Irked me more than
    scared me.

I think there are 3 North Alabama kayakers on this
forum, plus one in Central TN not far from me.
I can't recall who they are right now. Search the
forums for "kayak" and you'll see who's posted
on the subject. More will show up in this
    sub-forum over time no doubt.

I use 3M Solas tape so that boats can see me. My kayak at night lights up like a christmas tree! Plus they now have that wildcat lighting system you get for your kayak.

This is true - I was sitting in my yak on Honker Lake in the Land Between the Lakes KY, when a rather large deer, his bride and their youngin' came out of the trees and walked to the edge of the lake. I was no more than 10 feet from the shore and they ignored me. I guess they don't fear anything coming from the water. They went about their business while I fished the bank and eventually wandered off.

Sounds like fun...but I'm not sure I want to be at water level in the bayou with an alligator as long as my yak!

I have had 2 snakes, one cotton mouth and one water snake try to get in the yak with me. I just shoo'd them off with a paddle.
