Question for the fisherman....
Have always been a Lowrance guy BUT I realize that Garmin and Bird are compatible outfits. How many of you use or plan on using the new technology (where you can see a fish and watch him). In our kind of fishing....basically 2 types, drifting for cats in the summer (some crappie) and chasing crappie in the winter.
I just don't see how this new technology is gonna put more fish on my lines. Is it worth the cost? Myself, I think Garmin has an edge with their technology but still....investing another couple thousand just to watch a fish chase your bait or lure?????
What happen to a fisherman and his skill? We basically fish 3 lakes and I could take you to all the brush piles I know without a depth finder. What am I missing here? Granted that depth finder will help you locate the shad and usually where there is shad.....you will find fish.

Hmmm all I can say is scoping is fun but a chore sometimes. You can learn fish behaviors which is important and it also allows one to target big fish. I tend to pull cranks more and enjoy it more than scoping quite honestly

Livescope is a game changer for winter crappie. It can be both a blessing and a curse. For instance it will drive you crazy when you know they are down there but wont bite. It also causes me to stick with piles longer than I should because I know fish are down there.
However if you get good at livescoping it can be pretty amazing. We found fish today hanging tight to one vertical tree trunk with no branches. I don't know that we would've found them, much less caught them. Most were keepers too. You also get to see alot of fish behavior. You get to watch the fish leave the pile and use the boat as cover. You see them scatter as you approach the piles. I have learned more about crappie behavior with the scope then I knew previously by a long shot. I also lose a lot less jigs. I can also scan a pile, immediately tell if I want to devote any time to it, and move on if necessary.

I don't know if it will help you catch more fish, but you wont be spending time fishing a spot, when the fish are not there. Since I don't fish as much as I used to I just go with sonar and GPS. If i was younger and fished all the time, I think it would be worth getting into the new technology.
