just can't figure why some think the spawn is over? Just because you aren't catching 'hand over fist' with bites every cast doesn't mean the end. I'm not sure I've even caught a 'spawned out' female yet this year. Give it some more effort <*)}}}><
So, I took my daughter out of school Tuesday to go to Perry with me. It was not a great day of fishing. I live by Hillsdale but it's been hard to get any consistent bite there either. I would like to get my kids out one more time in the boat, but I am hearing that it may be over for this year. I don't need exact spots, but does anyone here have a lake that they are still catching good numbers at. Within an hour of Hillsdale?

I agree with Chat, all the fish ive been catching have pretty much all been males, only caught 2 females on Wednesday and both still full of eggs. Males move up first to create the next, females move up to complete the spawning, and then females will move off again while males stay on the next to guard the eggs.

Well, let me clarify. I have talked to people at both Perry and Hillsdale. Both older guys that seemed to fish often and both said it has slowed and they were hearing it might be done. Also, someone on here suggested that same thought the other day. Most of my experience comes from Hillsdale, but that is one of the most fickle lakes I ever fished. They are on again off again all the time. So I was trying to cast a bigger net on here, if you will, to gather a larger pool of information and, quite possibly, better informed informers.
I am a big believer in taking kids on fishing trips that give them good experience early in their fishing lives. That way they know what the hard days are rewarded with. So, I am trying to take them somewhere with a good chance of at least moderate day of fishing.
I think every female we've caught in the last week were full of eggs. We've caught a few males, but mostly females.

Quick thanks to "eylusion" on here for getting my some info from friends about Perry. A general thanks to this forum in general for all the info. I read some of the other stuff on Perry and decided on 5/17 to go to a section of the lake I had not fished before. I had to hunt around for the beds but caught well over a hundred fish, mostly males, and mostly shorts, but we managed to take home eight keepers each. Several females with eggs at 13". Knowing there wee fish to be had, even if little slow gave me the confidence to burn a day trying again. It was kind of a medium day, but considering the scenery, it was perfect.
