Wipers in the winter
I really fell in love with catching wipers the last 2 years but never fished during the winter before. I have read that catching wipers in the winter can be really tough. Does everyone agree with this? I did buy a cast net and have been successful getting shad but that may change also during the winter months. So my question is what strategies do you employ to catch wipers in the winter? I love catching those wipers what a great fish to catch. Going to try to fish for them at Clinton on Friday if the wind dies down.

Nice fish and thanks for the advice. Did you catch those on shad? One of the reasons for the question was I live very close to Clinton and its 1 1/2 hours to both CC and La Cygne. I fished Clinton on Friday and caught whites but no wipers and could not get any shad either. First time since I got my cast net in July that I struck out on the shad. Nice pictures and thanks for sharing.

All the wipers were on swimbaits. Whites were on a mix of spoons, traps, and jerkbaits. Getting shad should never be an issue on La Cygne if you're even halfway decent with a throw net and freelining live shad is the most consistent way to get wipers out there. Jigging spoons, rattle traps, and bucktails like the Spros are great for wipers as well but a 4" Storm Wildeye and Strike King King Shad catch the majority of my wipers each winter.

Got ahold of 3 of them at Pomona last week on an 8 ft. Crappie rod. All headed at a high rate of speed towards Oklahoma. Snap, never saw one of them.

This might be dumb question but do you eat those big whites and wipers? If so how do they taste? I've ate the smaller whites but never tried any that big.

Criddy, Yes they make a fine meal but you may want to cut out the red meat like a white bass. Going after them today at Clinton.
