You have to string together a few nights with at least 50 degree lows. A good gauge is watch for dandelions to show up. Usually mushrooms aren't far behind.
With the rain it prompted my curiousity on what time during the spring would be go time. Also, going to try and make it a family outing with wife and kids.

Heard they are finding small reds at
La Cygnes last few days
We need some rain here in Coffey county i think. Friday night temp down to 32 not going to help.
Agree with zummy = need a little more warmth overnight. Couple more weeks at least IMO.
I am not far from Blackdog and agree we need moisture. However we needed it last year as well, and a couple storms arrived when the temps got just right and it was a banner year for shrooms. My daughter has been asking about mushroom hunting since December.
I always find them in the North Central part of the state when the Redbud trees are blooming. I agree with the night lows of 50's
Earliest I have found them in NE KS (basically state line north of Topeka) is first week in April (2 years ago). One year I didn't find any until about the first of May (last year). Normally its around the middle of April. This year will be later than normal unless we get an extreme heat wave. The soil temp needs to remain in the 50's for about a week and they'll start popping. Once the soil temps stay in the 70's they quit. Soil temp this morning was 38. Soil temps fluctuate much more than water temps that could make it to the 50's with a good week of weather. So that means we would need about 2 weeks of good weather to start seeing shrooms. I'm guessing around the 21st of April here. Further south will be earlier. Some years I hear of people finding them south of Topeka 2 weeks before I do.
I have them in my back yard. Nothing yet, but might be out in a week or so as the Asparagus is starting to pop up.
