I've fished for these toothy critters for twentyfive plus years, but I'm no expert on the matter of the spawn or anything else for that matter. Just my . The spawn is tough fishin. Have fished in the snow, during a drizzle with ice in the guides-not fun and on mild evenings/nites-more pleasureable. All of my fishing has been done 1-2 hrs from Salina. I've never had a consistant bite during the spawn. As was stated, they are there for one reason and it's not eatin. As for the % of fish caught, most all were males. The very few females caught were released. My lures of choice are # 9 Rapalas or Storm Thunder sticks that size. You want that bigger profile in the water. Colors are chrome and black or blues, flor orange or perch patterns. A couple or three fish caught during the nite is pretty good for me but there has been alot of single-zip nites too. I prefer nites during the full moon phase or no moon at all. On the full moon phase I want a cloudy nite with at least a breeze blowing into the bank or dam that I'm fishing. Bright nites and calm water, verrrry slow fishin in my experiences. Usually I'll start fishin about the middle of this month thru Easter weekend for the spawn. However I've found that the males will hang around for a week or two after the spawn is over and they will be hungry! Again, I'm no expert on this or anything else for that matter, just my own stupidity when it comes to fishin.

Just some observations I've noticed, artificial light in the dark can limit your catch. I've found just enough to see while tying is probably best. Also, try to limit shining your light into the water as much as possible and while walking the bank. No, it won't kill your evenings fishing, but it sure impedes it.

As with many of you, that twilight and just after sundown are generally pretty good times. I've also found the witching hour to be awesome, especially when you pretty much "own the place". Anymore I even take my waders in the boat, that's just trial and error each of you will have do. Hope you sack-a-bunch

Today is the anniversary of my catching my personal best walleye. 7.5 lbs trolling a dark green jointed rapala on Cheney dam right at dusk. My Father in law was my fishing partner that day. It also turned out to be his last trip. His health had been deteriorating for quite some time and it got to where it was just to risky to take him anywhere medical assistance couldn't be readily available. He passed Jan 2 this year after a massive stroke. He is truly mssed.
