Default Today was a great day

I have been a crappie fisherman for 45 years by have only tied crappie jigs for 4 months. I started with your basic vice and have been saving my pennies to by a Peak rotary. Yesterday a good friend of mines drug me a garage sale. While waiting for her to shop around I struck up a conversation with a older gentlemen who happened to be the homeowner. He told me he was Korean war vet and I thanked him for her service and told him my late dad was also. We chit chatted about that for awhile and then we talked about fishing. He was from Michigan and moved down to Texas in 2000 to be near his 3 daughters. He advised he grew up as a trout fisherman but had not been on the water since he moved to Texas. I advised him I was not a fly fisherman but did own two generic flyrods that I use for crappie poles. I could tell he really missed fishing so I invited him to go on a crappie fishing trip with me. I told him I can't find place for him to use his flyrod right know but will be able to put him on some whitebass in a month when they start busting the surface.

He was so excited about the offer and I advised him I great time hearing about his experience in Korea but his stories reminded me of my dad telling me his war stories. I also told him dad taught me how to crappie fish although we only used minnows back them. He then ask me did I tye jigs and I advised him I had been at it for around 4 months and was still learning. He then went into the house and returned with a box of fly fishing materials. He told me I could have it all because he and his wife were downsizing and he had not tied in 6 years. I told him I could not accept them for free and he said give me $50 and take me fishing and everything in the box is yours. He made me promise not to look in the box until we got into the get in the car to leave. He said it would be worth the effort so I gave him the 50$ and shook his hand. We talked another 15 minutes and then I left. I was telling my friend how much of a cool a guy he was and honestly forgot about the box until he sent me a text. Then looked into the box and found some fly tying materials and two vises. A Danvise and Renzetti Traveler. In his text he said he did not have a son and he was downsizing so he wanted me to have them. Next week I will be taking old sarge on a fishing trip and will name a new tied jig in his honor. I know this thread is kinda long but I thought I would share.

That's a fantastic story with a funny twist. It made me smile to hear of you taking the gent out to do what you saw he really loved and missed. You've done a great thing.

When I started tying and made mention of wanting a vise, a member from LA, now passed on, contacted me and sent me two vises to try. The Danvise and the Renzetti Traveler. Now that's a funny coincidence. I still tie on the Renzetti, and a friend bought the Dan. Love my vise, and very little maintenance is ever needed. Enjoy the toys and the upcoming trip. Please take some pics and bring us along, wish I could go along.
