    Default My favorite minnow

That is my favorite minnow pattern. Does anyone think that it will work, in a smaller size most likely, for crappie? This one is on a #1 Mustad fly hook so I think it might be too big for crappie.

Any changes that might help it out short of a longer tail?
I love taking my kids fishing, now if I could just manage to fish at the same time.

Well, I am new here, and new to tying...
but I just had to reply.
You already mentioned the 'longer tail' thing and, yes, if you are
going for "minnow" then a longer tail for sure.

I love the way the flash on the back incorporates into the tail.
And the flaming jelly-belly is killer!

I can't think of any improvements needed.

I would buy this jig if presented in a shop...

    Nice, thx.

I figured I would have to modify it for crappie. This one is actually a steelhead jig. They hit head first so the tail is short.

It is really easy to make. The body is 2 different colored beads. The eyes are obvious and the flash is tied in backwards so it can be pulled over the beads and form a body keeping it smooth and streamline.

Will have to see what I can come up with that is crappie worthy. The beads might be a little big for smaller hooks but I have so many beads I should have something that will work.

I do see a potentail problem, the belly is gonna rid on top instead of on the bottom. I tied a couple to see how I could change it but not sure about them, will post pics in a few.

Agree with JJ that a longer tail would swim better. But I like short for zipping. Agree the transparent body is killer! How did you get that effect?

Edit: sorry, re-read that you used beads. They look flatter & more clear than the ones I've seen tho.

Additionally, if the "jig" is gonna be weighted to run point upright, the hook eye would be more functional inbent, rather than outbent, IMO.

I really think this pattern will be extraordinary! It reminds me of a smolt with egg sac.

Just started to ask about how it would ride, an easy fix would be to put the flash on the belly side, so the hook would ride point side up, and leave the eyes just like to have them.

    Just a thought.
