    Default New (to me) Material

Winter is my tying season and I have just started tying crappie jigs the past 2 years. I usually tie lots of bluegill bugs, bass poppers and a few deerhair jigs for smallies. Anyone ever use sillicone skirt material from bass jigs or spinnerbaits? I found a few I never used for replacements and started to cut away. It's hard to get them not to flair out, but I think they look ok.

Whats anyone's thoughts? Tried to tie it before... Fished it... Don't like it?

Yellow head jig is just chenille and marribou but really like it and thought I would put it up here.

    Thanks, Russ.

I add a couple feelers to my hair jigs for bass. Starflash is a round silicone with glitter I like a lot. To a black and blue hair jig, I add a couple black with blue glitter starflash strands. I also use the flat silicone for jigs as well.

I like your silicone skirted jigs, but would also like to add not to use too many on one jig as they bump each other and you can lose the movement effect.

You do exceptional work....very fine jigs. Thanks for posting.

Another material you may like to try is the metallic gift bag shredding I get from the Dollar Tree dollar store. It's the Voila brand and makes great little flashy jigs when tied on 1/16 ounce jigs. I paint the head red, use red thread, and a silver skirt with a red stripe on each side. So far, I've caught 20 species of fish on it, including crappie. I clip the strands just past the hook at various angles and each strand is doubled back to lock in.

Another material...the duster brushes at the dollar store come in pastels and are also made with translucent strands.....they kink easily, but as they are not stiff, that really won't matter too much. I slit drinking straw sections and slip them inside for protection.

Hi,very Nice Looking Jigs. I Like It When The Skirt Flares Out,it Gives The Bait A Larger Profile In The Water And The Fish See It Better. I've Been Tying Baits Like This For About Three Years And Have Been Selling Them On Ebay For Over Two Years.they Are Easy To Tie And The Colors Are Unlimited. I Buy Skirt Tabs From Barlow's Which Has A Good Variety.i Call These Jigs Rubberbutts.i'm New To The Crappie Family And If I Knew How To Post Pictures I'd Post Some Of Mine.i Have No Problem Posting Pics On Ebay.

the only thing I would say is IMHO the feathers add something this can not and that is the breathing action you can get from feathers.

Now on the other hand I think you can catch fish with this and especially bream, but I know of some people that tie jigs using Skirt type material. Try it and if the fish like it better then by all means use it, LOL! After all they are the real critics that count.

I should also add I have some little jig left over from before I started tying that have a silver head and red thread and tiny short skirt material that use to work great. Even the 1/16 oz. were very short so very small looking and good for picky days.

Give you a little tip Prowler when you 1st tie on to the hook go back just behind where you want your skirt to come off the hook and put about 8 wraps there then when you tie the skirt on tie right in front of this you'll have to experiment with the amount of wraps this might flare your skirt to much if you tie real tight like I do ,but it will flare it nicely.

I did figure on the different action, tried one out in our turtle tank and they do stand out kinda stiff looking, but so do alot of small tubes. Tought about running them behind a clip-on spinner while trolling and that would make them slim down and wiggle some. You are right, the fish will tell me (turtle seemed interested), I can't really get out to test stuff for real, everything is froze right now. Didn't want to make 20 of em' if someone tried them and they were a big flop. Thanks for the input!

JungleJimJigs, Thanks - glad to know someone does use this idea. Below the submit reply button is a button that says manage attachments. Once there browse for your img, click the upload button and close the window. Pict should be there when you submit.
