    Default New Year

    HAPPY NEW YEAR

They tell me that whatever I choose to do on the first day of the year, is what I will end up doing all year long. I guess I will be playing with my doll babies.

They also say that if I expect to have good luck this year that I must eat black eyed peas and collard greens. Unfortunately this doesn’t work and I do not like collard greens. Those that do like collard greens lie about liking collard greens to try to trick me into trying them again. I also do not enjoy goat cheese, even the stuff that has blueberries mixed in.

Bought an unusual cut of beef the other day. Picanah. It is a dry cut of meat with little blood. It comes off of the rump of the cow, closest spot to his pooh shooter. Top of the sirloin, sometimes called the sirloin cap. They say it is very flavorful and bold so when I saw it I got it. Not a popular choice for American butchers, who tend to slice it so as to be included in other cuts. Very popular in Brazil where their steakhouses slice it into steaks, skewer them, and then rotisserie them. I bought a container of Brazilian steakhouse spice rub to put on it. I am considering doing the skewer technique as I need some practice, but the smoker might turn this into a delightful piece of meat. Interesting to try techniques from other countries, as most of the ones that manage to get mentioned here in the states are good. We like our food to taste, well…… good.

I had bought three ribeye roasts when on sale just before Christmas. Sliced into ribeye steaks. Fat rib eye steaks. Yesterday ran to Sam’s and saw their fat ribeyes at $30 per copy. I got a steal of a deal on those roasts at $5.95 per pound. Fat ribeyes are fun. I like it when my arms get tired of slicing into my steaks.

Sam’s is the kind of place where you are presented with what appears to be a good deal, because you believe that buying in volume means cheap. Most of what is in Sam’s is not a deal. I do all the shopping at my house and I know what things cost. I really only go there to get their store brand paper towels and striking paper, both of which are excellent quality at a fabulous price. I get their shelled pistachios, shelled walnuts, shelled pecans, and cashews and create my own deluxe mixed nut snacks. No peanuts, no almonds. I go light on the walnuts, too. Sprinkled on salads, ice cream or simply snacked on from the container.

Anyways, Sam’s has a few other things, but I cast a jaundice eye when presented with most items. They have a good store brand laundry detergent pod thingie and their dishwasher pod thingie is good as well. I get their large rolls of plastic wrap and aluminum foil and Ziploc bags and they have good store brand trash bags. Good deals on name brand cleaners can be found occasionally. So I usually dump some serious cash when I go, but the supplies last a long time so I don’t go often.

They had large bags of navel oranges from California. Upon inspection they were a horrible deal. The bag imparts a lovely orange glow to the fruit, but move one of the fruits inside over to the side away, and they were pale yellow. Some had soft spots where they are rotting. Harvested before ripe to allow longer shelf life. I saw people getting these bags as if they were some sort of deal. Caveat Emptor- Buyer Beware…..it’s Sam’s.

I have to work in my garage today. I have to finish stowing stuff into the shed. I also got some things from my friend’s shed that I had been storing there, so need to organize shed. Got another 4 foot wide wire rack shelving unit to install as well. These worked out to be cheaper than building wooden shelves and much easier to install. The shed is full but not cluttered. She says I have too much stuff. So I grabbed some of her stuff and said I agreed with her and put that into the truck to make room for more, and said I was gonna make a run to the dump with her stuff. So now she might think I have too much stuff, but I don’t hear about it. Really, I only keep good stuff like tools and fishing junk, the rest of that mess is all hers. I just get to be the man who organizes her junk.

I had hoped to go fishing, but lately things have been not so nice. I mean I did not get any toys or candy for Christmas, and that still has me upset. I almost took one of my doll babies to attach to my sculpture fish thingie she thought I wanted for Christmas, instead of toys and candy. I was hoping she would complain about that so I could complain about not getting any toys, and having to make do with the sculpture thingie she thought would look nice on our dining room table, for my only toy. Yup, afraid so. I mean I never asked for artwork. I asked for toys and candy.

Still the thing does look nice, and yes it will be in the family for decades, but still it’s the principle that matters. I wanted and did not get. I suppose women are universally manipulative of what gets bought for Christmas. They buy clothes for their men. Not what he wants, rather what she wants to see when she looks over at his butt. Oh honey, you look so nice. I call this a clue and remember to ease that hanger over to the end of the closet pole where it will hide quite well. Nothing wrong with wife beater tee shirts and shorts with holes in them. I hate boat shoes with a passion.

I have a prediction for you guys. I suspect we are gonna see a tough year financially. Our rulers will do very well for themselves though.

I am so glad they got the Idaho killer. Looks like he did it for kicks. Death penalty state, too. I wonder if some do gooder jurist will want to save him so he can be rehabilitated and released some day. I told my wife, who is an expert on anything John Bennet, that I bet he cut his finger like OJ did, and left DNA mixed in with the victim’s blood. Very easy to isolate a killer’s blood drops BTW. I suspect they matched the found profile to one of his family member’s DNA submitted for a family tree thingie thing. Either that or they suspected him and followed him around and got his garbage and tested him that way. They are not saying how at this point. We have to wait another week or so to hear about it. I used to go to these types of scenes and remove the victims you know. This guy thought he was smarter than the cops and he ain’t.

Well Happy New Year and hope you got lots of toys and candy for Christmas.
Maybe they will bite this one……

If fireworks are any indication of good financial times. Then things are mighty slim in my area.
Picanah is supposed to be a great cut. It is on my to do list
The love for fishing is one of the best gifts you can pass along

    Oh now Grumpy……

Got a tip for you guys. Instead of storing flash a boo stuff from the middle using zip ties. Use pipe cleaners and wrap near the end and let it hang down straight. I hate kinks in my flash.

From my memory it's any kind of greens, like Cabbage or Mustard Greens and either with a little of the clear hot sauce from the little green peppers in the bottle.

    Works for me anyway, lol!

I leave mine in the bags stored in a drawer. Cut a small hole in the bag where it's joined together. When you want some reach through the hole with your scissors, pull out as many strands as you need through the hole and cut it off. Keeps it neat and doesn't take up space.
    Don't worry, catch crappie.

Grumpy- You don’t need to apologize to me for anything. I ramble on about things in my life, and it makes me happy to share. I am sorry that I upset you.

I have a fishing story just for you.

So my wife decides she wants to take the boat out for a run in the Sun. The weather was gorgeous. I had everything together early and was ripping ready to go. She on the other hand was watching her latest show. I wanted to get after them before the winds picked up. She wanted to take her time. So we compromised and left the house when she wanted to.

As we launched I spied a buddy and his partner fishing. He is pretty good, and was all set to land his boat, so I reckoned that the fishing might not be all that good. I also knew that the bite was probably long over as it was almost 10:00 a.m. So I decide to just take it easy and try to enjoy the day and not really fight for any fish. The weather could not have been any nicer. 60 some degrees and warm sunshine and light light winds.

I set out ten rods with four having plastic baits and six with various hand ties you have seen me post on here. Started trolling around. She likes to talk about ‘things’ so we did that. Then I saw a rod flex backwards and she reels in this devil.

I guess it was 11” and fought like a champ. Back in the drink he goes and off across the lake we goes. She was just going on and on about things and then another rod flexes over. She is learning how to fight fish. That fish was the same size as the previous model. Then she lost one right at the boat. Then another hit and this fish started jumping. I could see it was a LM bass and told her so. She wrestled with it and finally got it in the boat.

All of our fish were returned to grow up to be big fish. We ended our day after a couple of hours and motored on home. Nice way to spend our last day off due to holiday. She had a great time and so did I.

I did swim some of my creations next to the boat for a lookie see at their profile and actions. I was very pleased. The ones shaped like shad did indeed retain that shape while trolled along. This will encourage me to continue to mimic baitfish with my dollies.

There you go Grumpy. A fishing related post, from me. I suspect that others feel the same as you, and want this sub forum to be just about hand tied jigs. Once again I am sorry that my story bothered you. I also apologize to any others that feel the same way but never said so.
