    Default Rotary vise

Been tying crappie jigs for about 30 years and always wanted a rotary vise, I have been using AA vise for more than 43 years, before that time I typed bream and bass flies. Wanting to know if it’s worth the extra money, and the benefits of a rotary verses a fixed vise.

I started on AA vise as well. I love my Peak vise and very glad I spent the money to upgrade. I do use the rotary function, it is faster and good for viewing a jig from all angles but does it produce a better jig? Probably not but the ease and convenience makes it worth it to me.

Have you seen the video of Skip (Skiptomylu) tying on his vise? He’s a pro but gives good idea of rotary vise use.

Thanks BuckeyeCrappie, shipahoy41 thanked you for this post

Even if you don't use the rotary function to put material on it is nice to view your tie 360 degrees and apply head cement evenly.

I saw the rotary vices and wondered some. Wondered- would I rather a spinning cotton gin vice thingie so as to wrap the thread real fast, or a vice that was fast to pinch, easy and solid. I can rotate it to look at the jig at any angle, just it isn’t for fast twerlings and such. To load, you squeeze the large handle and then release. That captures the hook. Not screw like adjustments to secure the hook. Flexible steel, bent slightly, held in aluminum clamps. so when it relaxes the steel jaws capture the hook. Not much to go wrong with it and it is 0fast.

Royal vice. Chose an EBay stand with a trout painted on it vs. getting their expensive base. There are several other makes out there that might be a great match for you. Depends.

Try to guess what will interest you in the future, then settle in on that style and buy the one best suited. For me the Royal fit best, and I never seem to need the spindle ones. It wasn’t cheap but it wasn’t that much more than those. Anything recommended here will be solid.
Maybe they will bite this one……

My vise sounds similar to yours but it's called Crown Vise.

Very sturdy and no problem with the 360 view, just spin it around. I don't even tighten up the screws to keep it from spinning, not needed, so all that's needed to spin it is to just do it.

It does everything I need to do for $45.

I’ve tied on some different vises at stores and friends. I’ve only ever owned a Renzetti and while I got it used it was still a good bit of money for me at the time. I’ve never regretted it. There’s so many extras that I could buy if I had the need. If I never tied another jig I could get my investment back. The same goes for any quality vise or tool in general. Once you have good equipment under you your concentration goes to what you’re working on and not how to get it done on what you have instead of what you want.
