    Minnow head on bottom
Eye bead on a nail top one

The eyeball jig weighs next to nothing and might be interesting on a spider rig rod. Although I am not sold on the idea that eyes are key to getting bit. In nature some fish produce an eyeball spot on their tail so when attacked, the predator anticipates their direction of escape incorrectly, and they miss. Maybe crappie focus on this as well, but the trick really only works if the target is stationary. Traveling at a constant rate changes everything. Does a crappie require an eyeball to determine direction of escape or gauge the edibility of a moving object ?

The minnow heads will get placed on Beetle Spin harnesses and dragged behind the boards.

Might troll around some on Wednesday and conduct trials then.

Well maybe we should put eyes on or near the tail or about where the hook is? I have used Jungle Cock Nails for eyes before placing them back on the jig. Here is a pictures of what I mean.

So how long will it be before I discover legs and such ?

I’m afraid to dip the stupid thing for fear my sauce supply would disappear.

    Stink..... this thing gonna stink.

So overdose UV enhancement and overdose stinky smell good. Really all i need to add now is some noise.

Hey does anyone know what sounds good to a crappie ?

I imagine perhaps something that makes noises, but not necessarily at the level of the lure. The planer boards could make a plop plop sound for example and they would be close enough.

See a stupid fish has to become aware of your lure’s presence first. Then he evaluates what he has noticed. Then he either ignores or moves closer. Then he decides to go ahead and latch hold and taste the devil, or swim away. If it’s a really good presentation..... he commits and swallows, confident knowing that if it turns out to be bad he can easy spit.

None of this can occur if he never notices the lure’s presence. Oblivious.

I am thinking I at least have a chance at the fish if he first notices my fine offering. Maybe the shape is all wrong, or the stink is old and spoiled, and he decides not to bite. Still even then I did better than had he never been put in a position where he had to make a decision. He is stupid you realize. I want him deciding things.

I wonder if I could have the board drag an object behind it that behaved in a fashion that created a sound they liked and that upon hearing that sound coming along, past them as they hang out in their crib, get them a little more receptive to the idea of eating a meal. Possible even if wildly obscene.

So what noises do crappie like ?

I had a bad trip on the second dose of Maderna vaccine. They should have told me about the possibility of such right up front, so I could plan for a bad day, should it come. It wanted to be a two day event, but it is sunny out there, and nice and getting out of bed seemed best medicine.

Hit the lake before Sun rise, and surprised to be only boat there -Newnans Lake Gainesville. I did well with planer boards there last trip, and right away had a big fish on a board again. Hadn’t gotten maybe two rods ready.

    Catfish.

Drifted with the wind, which was stiff at times. Used TM to alter speed and such. The wind blew the boat at about a half MPH. So I felt no need for a wind sock, and was able to easily make changes/increases in small increments. Pastor said I need the fancy TM, still I felt that it was fine, just a pre-planning issue. If I am right there, sitting next to TM, everything is pretty much straight forward. Now if I step to the back ..... suddenly the boat is heading way off course. Figure the hull is responding to my weight, in effect steering the boat. Sat in back center seat and used the steering of the main motor, not running, and used it as a rudder. Experimenting.

The winds were making small white caps and the boards tracked differently than in smooth waters. Not a straight pull, everyone in formation, but a bobbing and lurching and such. Learned a lot about boards today, turning the boat and dealing with winds blowing against their lines. I was so intimidated, maintaining four planer boards, that as soon as I got home I ordered two more so I can soak six of them. Three out each side.

I am convinced that this is key to big fish when fishing in shallow water. Being able to make a presentation that does not involve a stressful event, such as a huge whale fish thingie passing right over top. Yes boats do blow by all the time, but not so much always right over top. Long lining might be catching them as they regroup, from a typical mass hysteric retreat. Long rods for spider rigging are all about presenting the lures to the fish without the issue of boat presence being involved. That only after he hits or passes on the bait does he notice the approaching whale fish thingie.

Twenty feet deep is different, but five or six feet deep.....planer boards. So I swapped out one of my boards, two each side, to fashion up a three on one side, one of the other configuration. To see what three boards looks like. It was easy.

I am using 12 pound test BassPro Shop’s Off Shore variety Tight Line in yellow. It glows. Look at how visible the line is in the pictures.

That far board was 60 yards away from the boat, swimming it’s way through very shallow water. I was able to guide it along the edge, within reason, but effectively enough for me to grin.

In the rougher water the boards were somewhat awkward to manage, but everything seemed to start working. I think I can learn more and manage well.

After a couple of hours dragging four boards and pushing four rods out the front, a board splashed.

Both the catfish and the croppie each took the new fluffy jig attached onto a Beetle Spin harness.

    Dipping is no problem.

I dipped them down into that glorious goo, and away !!! Not a drop of sticky stinky goo in the boat. The fluff sucked up the goo just like I imagined. Drug them jigs for easy a mile, sniffed it and still smelled Garlic. As in Garlic Slab Sauce, Great medium for absorbing scent, because it adheres and stays with the bait.

    No other fish were available.

So I learned that method of presentation is important. Visibility is important. Smell/taste is important. Sound is next and I have some ideas for little noise makers, and might luck out. Be cool if I could get vibration, too.

I am making the move to heavier jig weights. Easy way to add depth behind a board. Ordered four Daiwa Wilderness Trolling rods 9-6 MH. These will be great rods for planer boards. I also think I want to back off a tad on the amount of scent and use a smaller patch of fuzz.
