    Default What do I need

I am thinking about tying some jigs and need some kind of starting point.
What are the must haves and don't really needs?

By no means am I an expert but this is all I have for tools and vice. I only use white thread as if I have any showing after I tie off I just use a sharpie in whatever color to color the thread. Hardly do I need to do this though. I have a tub of chenille, hackle, marabou, buck tail and some flash. This suits me for style of fly I tie.

Fur (including fine dog fur), feather, tinsel in combinations or by itself, fine silicone strands and other materials I can't think of at the moment. You can also wind a pipe cleaner made for jigs that comes in many colors.
A fly tying vice comes in handy as well as a bit of super glue to seal the knot (a special knot) and windings. I use a bobbin to control the thread spool and for tighter thread wraps. (as shown in the above reply)

I started with a few things and soon decided that I need everything....and then more and more.....never ends.

Dr Nip said it well, but I use a couple of more tools than he showed. A threading loop for the bobbin, a bodkin with a sharp, hardened point, and I have 4 bobbins. Some are set looser for finer thread, others tighter for the bigger stuff. A good white light also helps me see what I’m doing, I use an ott light that I robbed from my wife. A good vise is a worthwhile investment that if you buy right and take care of it, you’ll hand down to someone.
