    Default Jig Head Sizes

I have been using collared jigs, sizes 1/32 and 1/16, with Bobby Garland bodies. Years ago I trout fished and tied flies. Still have the equipment and have started tying some crappie jigs. On a few I have just removed the collar; others I have tied over. My question is about the relative size of the head of both size jigs collarless compared to the same weight jig collared. Anyone have a picture? And, what size collarless are most of y'all tying?
    Thanks

Most guys use a 1/16, but lots also use 1/32 and 1/8. The first thing you need to know is when they add a collar to a jig head, they don't change the size of the head so if that is a true or close to 1/16 then the ones with a collar are heavier than 1/16 even though it says 1/16!

Size of jig head many times will come down to how deep a guy fishes, in spring and fall I use 1/32 and in summer fishing 14 to 25' down I use 1/8 and 1/4.

A head with a collar will take less material and you can cut it off if you don't want it.

I ties jigs from 1/32 to 1/4 of ounce. Strangely my favorites are in between sizes. I use 1/24, 3/32 and 3/16 the most. They are a little harder to find (assuming you don't pour your own) but well worth the effort when you do find them.

Bigger the better IMHO around these parts of Tennessee and North Miss....Fish are big so jigs should match the fish...I use 1/16 and 1/8 sized jigs mostly,,, but 1/4 isn't out of the circle for deep waters
