I have tinkered with tying fly lures but I never thought of jigs. I never really have done much jigging. I fish mostly rivers and creeks in Eastern NC. Fish move so much that trolling or pushing seems to cover more ground to find them. I work full-time so I have never set up any hurdles to hold fish. Maybe I need to look into making a fish habitat and jig for them?

Every Spring and Fall I long line troll little Roadrunners (1/32 oz) for crappie and have done this as far back as the late 1970's! Only time I ever need an minnows is in summer fishing brush!

How deep do you troll. How far back from boat? What speeds? I normally use heavier jigs with plastics on them. Sometimes I pull beatle spins to catch white perch

Okay in the spring on this lake the fish will pile up in water about 6 1/2' deep and the little jigs I use are light so when I pull them they do not get very deep at all, maybe a couple feet, maybe a little more, but can't be much. What I do is the same thing I was doing when I figured out how to do it back in the late 1970's. I use a spinning rod and reel first and I have the 1/32 oz jig on and I cast it as far as I can, then I start my troll motor going about .4 to .8 MPH. The bait is not all that far behind me and no the fish do not care. I fish with one guy if we are in his boat there are many time I can look from his back seat and see his jig being pulled along, lol! For sure once he gets a fish on I can see it and it's not far back. If I had to guess at how far back mine is, I will just throw out maybe 30 feet? Not sure, but it just works well and has for a long time. I have even caught crappie in Hydrilla where the water was 20' deep. They were in this water about at the end of spring and before moving to deeper water and I can still catch them trolling the same way the same speed!

I use a heavier jig in summer.

Usually I would not use that type of marabou as I normally use solid colors but the bar type is been around for quite some time and yes it is quite attractive for making jigs.

for many years I have been tying jigs with different fly tying patterns they are quite effective at times especially on the trout because you can get down in words they normally feed or feed on bug looking stuff we will try to post some different patterns in the future to give you an ideal on what you can do with jigs it is a lot of fun to see what you can come up with there are 40 zillion different patterns of trout flies a lot of them are real simple intercourse you will get into the more exotic type of patterns.
