Default Herring head vs. Pony head?

This is not a specific mold question this has to do with two different style of heads that create a platform to tie on. My question is what advantage would a herring head have over a pony head? Is it worth investing in the mold and extra accessories that it requires. I realize a lot of what we do has nothing to do with being necessary just curious and looking for some feedback. Thanks

Make no mistake the pony head/horse head "Aka"Roadrunner is one of the best lure's ever designed. Our 2 cents. We have and make both pony and The herring head mold's would not do with out either mold. The pony head can be tied with feather's,hair ect or fish with plastic's. The herring head is very balanced lure which we like over the pony head.It also can be tied on our use with plastic's.We like the herring head because the blade "spinner" is farther away from the body of the bait.Has more vibration from the blade. The Herring head is more balanced than the pony head. Hope this helps.

Never have used the Herring head, but have used the Roadrunner since the late 1970's and mostly use it long lining so weight distribution means nothing for me. I just like how many crappie I catch using the Roadrunner or Pony head. I don't know about any trouble you can get into if you decided to sell a Herring head, but a Pony head is a lot different when it comes to that as it's only legal to make for your self as Blakemore owns a Trademark on that design head so you take a big risk making them to sell. Just an FYI for you!

Thanks Skip. I won't be selling any of my heads. It takes me to long to get the hardware on them. I would have to charge 5 bucks each to make it worth my time. lol

It's a to like tying, there is no real money in the selling end so you better enjoy tying, lol! I mean you make a little and buy some more materials and maybe a little extra for the fishing habit, but making a living tying jigs is not something that is reasonable and way easier to make a living doing other things.

I've often wondered how they can keep you from selling the road runner jig but Doit can sell you the mold. Seems to me that also would be a Trademark violation.
I like the Herring much better than the Road Runner. I would pour my own to use a Pony head but wouldn't waste my money on a Road Runner now.

the smallest the mold pours is 1/16 oz. These are lighter though because I cut the collar off. Guessing as I haven't weigh them I would say close to a 1/24 oz.I tried tying them with the collar and didn't like the result at all. I'll be modifying a mold soon to pour these without a collar.

Would be interesting to see for sure. I know most molds do not adjust for the collar so the collar jig heads are usually much heavier than the stated weight. About the only true weighted head I have ever seen is the 1/32 Oz Roadrunner head and it really is about as close to 1/32 as they get. Their Original Marabou 1/16 head is actually closer to a 1/8 than a 1/16. I would bet the ones you pour of this Herring head with collar is more than a 1/16!

Actually just from looking at it I actually like the Roadrunner/Pony head design better for my purpose with the swivel poured in the head. Of course I mostly use a willow leaf blade on mine so the distance from the head to the blade is not important to me. And actually the only thing I care about is if I catch enough crappie, lol! Since I have enough Roadrunner and Pony head to last me a long time, I doubt I jump over to try the Herring head anytime soon, but they look just fine to me, but I wouldn't use a 1/16 at all as I don't use a 1/16 in spring in my long lining.
