Default How to keep chenille body from slipping?

I usually tie my bodies even with the point of the hook, like the bottom one, and after catching a few fish they end up kind of unraveling down the hook. Here is one that caught fish last night with an unused one of the same design.

I tie the beginning piece of chenille parallel with the hook shank going away from the head, so my first wrap is toward the jig head. After my first wrap up to the head I wrap with thread, then wrap chenille down away from the head, then wrap that with thread and wrap back to the head so that my thread ends up near the jig head. Then wrap the chenille back up to the head and secure it with thread only at the jig head. I know that's long winded but can someone figure out what I'm doing wrong? Am I making too many wraps with the chenille? I have been trying to secure the bottom end better without compromising the look of the body but they have still been slipping. Any advice?

Im not sure but maybe you need to lay a little more thread base from the head toward the tail before you start tying in materials.Make sure your giving some tension to the chenille when your wrapping as well. Also apply some cement when finished if your not already.Hope this will help you a little.

Try stripping the chenille fibers off the central thread when you first tie it onto the hook.

I only use one layer of chenille and never have problems with slipping. You could switch to using a larger size chenille and just using one layer of wraps if you want the full body look.
    Don't worry, catch crappie.

I use larger chenille than some and like the look, just one layer. I lay it on the shank from the head to the bottom of the base winding and start at the portion towards the bend in the hook. then wind the thread to the head and let it hang and wrap the chenille pretty snug towards the head and then finish. you could add some sally or cement to the initial capture before you start to wind the chenille and if nothing else, that would hold it.

Watch this slideshow from Skip http://www.crappie.com/crappie/jig-t...tying-jig.html Look at his thread base and how far up the hook the chenille goes. He's got people using jigs he ties and upwards of a couple of hundred fish per jig so they work!!!!!

Don't know if my way is "correct" or not, but after running and wrapping (with thread) the chennile down the hook shank, prior to the return wrap (back towards the head) I add a coat of SH to help lock it in place. I haven't been tying/posting for a while, but that will change before long (getting ready to head for warmer climate for the winter Thumbs Up)

Think that Fatman has a point and will agree with him. Skip jig are very well tied and last a loooong time. The slideshow tutorial that he gave this site is a must for any jig tier. While you can use different techniques best not argue with success. I like the way he does his chenille wrap and have adopted his technique. Use any method that works but I would rather do it right the first time and be done with it. Would rather be fishing than tying on a new jig because it came apart.

Thanks for all the advice, I really appreciate it. It's tough starting a new hobby and it makes it a lot easier to progress when everyone is so willing to help. I had seen Skip's tutorial several times but didn't think to consult it for this issue. Looks to me like I may be wrapping way too much chenille on. I think with as much chenille as I have wrapped over itself, it is kind of rolling backwards down the hook.

Not all of my jigs are doing this either. May be a difference in chenille as I'm all over the board with different kinds and sizes. A guy I work with has caught about 40 fish, ~15 being white bass, on a squirrel jig that I tied for him and it looks like it did when I gave it to him.

I'll start wrapping a little tighter and I'll try just one wrap with my bigger chenille, looks like what skip does and what many here suggest. I'm very open to changing my technique to get a more durable jig.

The guys have put you in the right direction! Just lay down a very good and tight thread base and try to hold you chenille without letting go until it's at the head and whip finish. I have never had the problem you are describing so not sure why it's doing what it is.

Sorry to be a bit slow as I just got back from Arkansas fishing.
