When you do this you will get more random points at the tail end and better action. If they need to be cut shorter, cut the end that was pulled off that center vein. Hope I'm not putting words in his mouth....

I do like them and stick with pretty short tails for gills.

Yes take the feather part off the stem and make a stack of them and then crag them so you can cut that end off and when you tie it like that the individual feather pieces are free to move.

You should not see the stem in the tails. Now I could be wrong and seeing something that is other than the stem, but that first pic in the middle top you see a stem like you just took the whole feather and tied in on the hook.

If you look at my Sig picture, you will see 3 different batches I tied in. The first one tied on was the Chart and then the Black and then the Chart again and there are no stems there. I have and still do a very few times leave the stem in, but it has to be so thin that it adds almost now stiffness to the tail. So 99% of the time I have no stems in my marabou tails.

Here is another picture of some marabou tail jigs and look very close and you don't see any stem there. You know hackle the stem stays in or the tail would be very short, too short. Well on marabou the feather most of the time is very wide so when you strip off the feathers and use just them it has more action and looks better too.

Thanks I did not know that about the marabou I have been putting the whole feather in all the jigs that I use it on. In fact most of the video's online show them using the whole feather as well but just the end with the real small vein in it. I often wondered what they did with all the marabou that was left on the thicker end of the vein now I know.

Guess you are seeing how new I am at this only been tying for a few months now and even though I can see my ties getting better I dont think I have even moved up that rating meter much above beginner, but as they say you learn as you live and I just learned something here.

This is just another feather in the old hat as to why I really like this site, the experience, knowledge, friendship and willingness to teach and share with others is just endless in here.

Thanks again for teaching this old dog something new

They all look good. Never tied any 1/100's but plenty 1/80's. Caught plenty bluegill and crappie on them under a cork. Rabbit hair also works great on the real small jigs.

Give you one more tip I have learned, probably took me too long (and much cussing) to figure this one, and betting most here did this from the start.

Start with the feather pieces near the thicker end of the vein. Pull off the stuff thats just fuzzy junk and pitch it. Work your way to the top thinner part. Starting at the top and working to the thicker end is hard to do, and will make ya mad!!! I gotta thick head so probably no one else here ever tried from the top down! lol

Ditto and yes that is the place to start. Most have been tying longer than I have too, but I studied very hard on line everything I could find. I actually started in early 2006 so keep trying and reading and looking at fly tying sties for additional tips and patterns you like. Just adjust them for a jig.

    Your doing just fine though!

So far that is the problem and only seen it in packs of 20 feathers or so. I guess it's hard for them to do that and a lot slower than being able to take pounds and pounds and fie them all at once. I am pretty sure it can't be done on an easy mass way.
